FC7 and beryl on Dell Optiplex 320
by Craig White
Fedora 7 running X86_64 - perhaps I am reaching too high here.
Dell Optiplex with integrated ATI Radeon Xpress 200 (RC410)
When I start beryl manager, I lose window title bars and KDE panel.
So I installed fglrx-x11 and kmod-fglrx from livna which I can't get to
launch at all. So I switched back to open source 'radeon' driver.
Is this possible (Google isn't giving me much in terms of solutions)

How do i auto sign rpm's with rpmbuild?
by Mark
Hey,
i'm making quite a few rpm's at this moment but i can't seem to find
out how to auto sign them.
I currently run commands like this:
rpmbuild -ba --sign my_rpm.spec
than it wants me to fill in a passphrase. i want to do that automatically.
It is possible (i don't assume that fedora is typing it all manually
for there packages).
Any idea's on how to do this?

Steps to install Fedora 7 using a USB external hard disk on i386 system without DVD Drive
by potat0
Hi,
As we know, the Fedora 7 ISO image only comes in DVD format. For those that would like to install/upgrade to Fedora 7 but without a DVD drive, I did the external USB hard disk install since most of us should have an external hard disk or can easily borrow from a friend.
The steps are as follows.
(1) Download both "F-7-i386-rescuecd.iso" and "F-7-i386-DVD.iso" from any of the mirror site.
(2) Burn the "F-7-i386-rescuecd.iso" to a CD-R
(3) Copy the "F-7-i386-DVD.iso" to a USB external hard disk into a folder say "Fedora" (or any name). Note that this external hard disk is a FAT32 formatted disk for my case.
(4) Connect the external hard disk to the system USB port.
(5) Boot the system using the rescue CD-R which you have created in step (2)
(6) Choose the 1st option "install/upgrade" existing system
(7) Select Hard Disk option
(8) Choose the USB hard disk detected by your system. It should be something like /dev/sXXX. Use the F2 key to browse the content of your external hard disk to confirm the correct path of your external USB hard disk.
(9) Specify the folder as "Fedora" (or any name) you created in step (3). This folder is where the "F-7-i386-DVD.iso" is located.
(10) The normal Fedora 7 install screen take over.
(11) Reboot after the installation and your system is now installed/upgraded to Fedora 7.
It works for me, hope this simple guide works for you too especially for those hunting high and low for the Fedora 7 iso image in CD format. Fedora 7 is FREE so why pay $$$ for the iso image in CD format.
Regards,
Ernest

Simple but no joy swap
by Karl Larsen
I have no swap listed when I run top. This is not true but the swap
file at /dev/sda3 was around 250 bytes. I had just goofed but I had a
much larger swap on the other hard drive and it worked great.
Now just one hard drive and today I used fdisk and redid this hard
drive to have the same number of partitions but the /dev/sda3 is now 2
Gb. I used mkswap /dev/sda3 and it seemed to work but perhaps not
because top still says no swap... I will read man mkswap and see if
there is something else I need to do.

How to rebuild while preserving an LVM disk
by Cliff Avey
I have an ancient (FC3) Fedora that I want to move to FC8. I figure it
might be cleanest to just rebuild it rather that upgrading (if that's
even possible, it's so old). I can blow everything away except one
thing. Separate from my OS disk, I have to SATA drives built into a
raid-0 with md, and then an lvm physical volume group built on that. I
need to keep that, and I don't have enough room anywhere else to backup
and restore it.
If I unplug the raid drives, and rebuild my system, how can I hook them
back up? Is the configuration info describing the md array, and the lvm
groups stored on my os drive, which I'm blowing away. How can I save
and/or recreate it once I get the main system back up?
Also, I don't know if there have been major changes to md or lvm (or xfs
for that matter, since the logical volume is formatted as xfs). Will I
have any problems using drives set up with a relatively old version of
this software.
Thanks for your advice.

cal -3 format issue
by Wade Hampton
I just noticed that cal -3 for this year messes up September. I
tested this on both FC4, FC5, and CentOS 5. The last full week of
September is 3 bytes too far to the left so that the 24th is under the
Sunday column. Interesting, very minor bug....

Need help w/ bcm43xx-mac80211 issues? (ndiswrapper considered harmful)
by John W. Linville
First, the issue that lots of people are having...if you are getting
the "YOUR FIRMWARE IS TOO OLD" issue, I recommend that you follow
this procedure:
# you need to be root
wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/sources/broadcom-wl-4.80.53.0.tar.bz2
tar -xjvf broadcom-wl-4.80.53.0.tar.bz2
bcm43xx-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware/ broadcom-wl-4.80.53.0/kmod/wl_apsta.o
That should fix things for most people. However, some people still
need/want to use the older driver even on devices that are (or should
be) supported by the newer driver. If you are in this situation,
I recommend this procedure:
# save the file attached to this email as "bcm43xx-old-config"
# you need to be root
./bcm43xx-old-config
The internals of that file look a little hairy, so I don't want people
having to type the commands themselves... :-) Anyway, the second
procedure is ONLY for those who have completed the first procedure and
find the bcm43xx-mac80211 driver to be unacceptable. This includes
_some_ bcm4318 users and apparently a _few_ bcm4306 users. This should
keep most of you from having to use an unsupportable alternative
like ndiswrapper.
Hth!
John
