SELinux, F8, and httpd
by Nathan Grennan
How do I disable SELinux completely for httpd? In F7 from what I have
read it was "setsebool -P httpd_disable_trans 1". I get the errors below
when I try that. I looked in the policy files and couldn't find any
reference of it. I looked in system-config-selinux, and only found
options to tweak small aspects of SELinux for httpd, but not completely
disable it. I also notice there doesn't seem to be options to disable
selinux for any service. Not having a per service disable option means
your only recourse in some situations is simply to put SELinux in
permissive mode.
libsemanage.dbase_llist_set: record not found in the database
libsemanage.dbase_llist_set: could not set record value
Could not change boolean httpd_disable_trans
Could not change policy booleans
I want to disable httpd, because I don't want to have to run
restorecon ~/public_html/dir if I move a directory from ~/ to
~/public_html. I find the whole idea of restorecon funny. It isn't like
chown or chmod where you give it options telling it what to change it
to. It is just supposed to fall back on policy. So why not just have the
system automatically set the default policy on the move? You can say,
but there is chcon, but even if you use it to hand set something, if you
restorecon or relabel on boot are have used in the future it is likely
going to wipe any changes made with chcon.

Cached memory
by Tom Spec
Is there a kernel parameter or something I can tune to limit the amount of memory that will be used for cache (i.e. 144 in this example)? Let's say I never wanted that to go past 64.
free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 503 399 104 0 67 144
-/+ buffers/cache: 187 315
Swap: 511 0 511

Video interference & slow running solved but...
by Frank Cox
I seem to have solved a problem and created a new one.
I got an ATI X1550 video card and set that up to use the DVI output to my
monitor instead of the analog VGA that I had off of the built-in Intel video.
To my surprise, that seems to have got around the issue of that Intel bios bug
causing the huge slowdown on this computer (see the "s-l-o-w installation"
thread that I started the other day. I don't need to specify any "mem=" kernel
parameter any more; it just works at full speed without any problem.
In addition, this seems to have solved the problem of the interference lines on
my display -- I haven't seen one so far since I put this card in.
However...
I can't manage to get 1680x1050 video resolution. "Out-of-the-box" I got
1400x1050, which looks squashed. I tried fiddling around with xorg.conf by
specifying the modeline and resolution that I want. This is what I ended up
with:
QUOTE:
# Xorg configuration created by pyxf86config
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Default Layout"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Keyboard0"

Option "XkbLayout" "us+inet"
EndSection
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"

SubSection "Display"

EndSubSection
EndSection
END OF QUOTE
This made it worse because all I get is 1280x1024 using this xorg.conf. I
copied what appeared to be the relevant lines from the xorg.conf file that I had
made for Fedora 7 and the Intel video chipset a while back when I first got this
widescreen monitor. Obviously, I've missed something somewhere.
I would like to get this going without having to install the proprietary ATI
driver, if I can.
So... what can I do now?

Compaq Presario SR5113WM
by Mike Chambers
Just bought this computer today after work (mainly due to
affordability), and just wanted a quick thought before tearing into it,
and reinstalling Windows and then adding Fedora, as well as then taking
my current desktop and using it as my server (and putting my old hp
machine up for time being). Has anyone had any experience with this
type system (or at least the MB, CPU and such) and works OK with Fedora
being AMD 64 Athlon? Haven't played with that type processor yet, so
getting heads up first.
Below is the basic specs on the computer if not already aware if you
wanted to look and comment. Thoughts appreciated, especially before I
hop in the shower, and at least fire it up to get initial impressions on
it before tearing into it.

logwatch reports
by Gene Heskett
Greetings all;
The logwatch reports emailed to root every night are a bit of a puzzle in the
disk free space dept.
Without my actions, I'd think it ought to be fairly stable, but I'm seeing df
reports of /dev/LogVolGroup00 having 51GB used one day, and 47GB used the
next day. And last nights was 45GB. I haven't done that much housecleaning,
and df now reports 47GB used right now.
Surely there has not been 2GB of incoming mail since kmail last expired stuff,
more like 100k maybe, so I'd like to figure out where all this data is coming
from and and going to.
I just scanned all the way through an lsof report without seeing any red
flags.
Does anyone have an Idea on how to 'catch this in the act' folks?

How to build an apache webserver

Fedora includes apache. If you don't have it already, just:
yum install httpd httpd-devel
and
chkconfig httpd on
service httpd start
But if you are going to run this for serious production, I'd use RHEL or
CentOS instead of fedora so you don't have to do frequent OS version
updates with the associated stability risks.
*This is only for home network practice. I have been using fedora for
years some old redhat also, I have just never learned the basics of
setting up a webserver and want to learn how. From the ground up.

Video capture on usb device on video4linux
by Paul Johnson
I have a Pinnacle dvc-80 gadget that takes output from a vcr and into
USB. In Windows, I can capture output with this device. Now I'm
wondering if I can make it work in Linux. I need software to do the
capturing.
I load the module for v4l and in dmesg I see that the device is found
and registered:
USBVision[1]: registered USBVision Video device /dev/video1 [v4l2]
USBVision[1]: registered USBVision VBI device /dev/vbi1 [v4l2] (Not
Working Yet!)
usbcore: registered new interface driver usbvision
I am guessing that sets me up to do video capture, but i can't find
software that can do the capture on USB. In kino, it seems to insist
that only firewire can be used.
If you can advise me of a way to capture this video input. I gather
the input should be stored as avi or mpg in order to fit my goal,
which is to write it on a DVD.

Writing to DVD+R DL
by garys@email.com
Hello - A couple of months ago I purchased 3 Memorex DVD+R DLs. K3b
assures me that my writer is capable of writing a
DVD+R DL yet each time I write to one ( without any error messages) the
finished disk is unable to be mounted. ( the error message tells me there
is no media to be mounted). So - the question - Are other folks
succeeding in writing double layer DVDs. (using fc8 and
k3b). .......gary
