ISO Uppercase Issue?
by Michael D. Berger
Following these steps leads to peculiar results:
1. On an old Win2k box using an old Roxio, create an iso9660
CD (CD1) with some file names in mixed case.
2. Using the same box, use the same Roxio to copy CD1 to CD2,
iso9660.
3. On the same box, look at the files on CD1 & CD2. All ok.
4. On an FC7 or FC8 box mount CD1 iso9660 and look at the
files. All ok.
5. On an FC7 or FC8 box mount CD2 iso9660 and look at the
files. ALL FILE NAMES ARE CHANGED TO LOWER CASE.
I created 3 copies of CD2, and got the same results!
Now in step 2, instead create CD2 on a WinXP box with Nero.
On the linux boxes the case is correct. I did this only once.
Does anyone know anything about this?
Thanks,
Mike.

Question on Fedora's RPM of Mailmail and Sendmail
by Ben Kamen
Sendmail works.
Mailman works.
Mailman's wrapper under sendmail doesn't work.
What I get is:

> "|/usr/lib/mailman/mail/mailman post mailman"

Now, I would normally know how to fix the problem - but I thought to myself..
Do the developers know that out of the "yum" box - Sendmail and Mailman as
RPM'd don't work with each other or am I missing a README somewhere.
I'm more than happy to recompile both programs, but that's bypassing the point
of using RPM's in the first place. It would be nice to see the RPM work, not
have to go recompile anyway.
So, I'm sure this is a common question, but this is the first problem I've had
making sense of a Fedora distribution and the included docs in the mailman
docs directory don't talk about how the "run as GID" settings for mailman
were set on compile.
Little help? (and thanks!)
-Ben

How do I turn on DMA for ide-scsi DVD drives
by spmirowski
Hello,
Back when Fedora handled disc drives as ide, I would use hdparm to turn
on DMA. Now that Fedora 8 seems to run them as SCSI devices, hdparm
can't tell them to turn on DMA. Any ideas how to get them blazing fast
again?
Thanks,
Stephen

Re: 1400x1050 with fglrx

Yes!!
It has been broken for a while, but livna have the 8.1 fglrx driver
rpms out today, and 1400x1050 is back, at least on Dell. There is a note
in ATI/AMD's release notes to the effect it is a fixed bug.
There are still no desktop effects. Does anyone know about that?
If I type:
compiz-manager
I get:
Checking for Xgl: not present.
No whitelisted driver found
aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity
Odd - I expected aiglx. I change compiz-manager to whitelist "fglrx",
but get:
Checking for Xgl: not present.
Detected PCI ID for VGA: 01:00.0 0300: 1002:7183 (prog-if 00 [VGA
controller])
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: not present.
Trying again with indirect rendering:
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: not present.
aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity
Which is strange, because:
glxinfo | grep pixma
GLX_ARB_multisample, GLX_EXT_import_context,
GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap,
GLX_SGIX_visual_select_group, GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap
Any ideas anyone?

An interesting observation
by Leslie S Satenstein
Hi,
For the past 5 years I had the cable modem facing downstream VOIP motorola box and that was facing the netgear router (with wireless). Since my son moved out, three months ago and took the spare computer, I became a one computer owner.
I left the router in the loop, as I thought to obtain a second computer to replace what I gave away.
Yesterday, I bypassed the router, and noted a marked improvement in response times. Is it subjective? Firefox appears to works better, with what appears to be faster responses. I also noted that Firefox did not lose responses. (I had the problem with the router in place that Firefox would hang, waiting for a return response. To get that final or missing response, I had to click on the refresh button. Now, it does not seem to hang).
Any comments.

Broadcom 43 stopped working in FC8
by Michael D. Berger
On my WinXP FC8 dual boot laptop, I had my wifi working
after following installing the code as indicated on this
newsgroup. Now it no longer works with FC8, while it
continues to work with WinXP on the same box.
Suggestions would be most appreciated. For these tests,
I have encryption off. Here is some data:

Broadcom 43 & weak signals: F8 vs WinXP
by Michael D. Berger
I have a dual boot laptop with a Broadcom 43 and WinXP and F8.
In F8, I connect with a gui entitled "Network Device Control".
I am working in an area with a marginal wifi signal. It
appears that in cases where F8 will not connect, WinXP connects
immediately. Can anything be done about this?
Additionally, in F8, if I type specify SSID for the strongest
signal, it won't connect at all. In this case, the SSID
consists of several words. In another case, where the SSID
was one word, and the signal was stronger, I could specify it
successfully. Is this expected?
In the present case, therefore, I do not know to which of
several nodes I am connected. Is there a way to find out?
Thanks for your help.
Mike.
