Kernel 2.6.24.x boot problem

Hello,
Starting with kernel 2.6.24.3-34.fc8 Fedora fails to boot.
It works well with 2.6.23.15-137.fc8 and lower versions.

2.6.24.x kernel crash when swap used

I've managed to get a bit more information re the kernel 2.6.24.x
crashes I have when physical mem is used up.. but first to recap:-
I have an acer 5620 core 2 duo running the x86_64 version of fedora 8
with 2GB Ram and 2GB swap. It works fine with kernel 2.6.23.15-137.fc8,
but when I try any of the 2.6.24.xx-xx.fc8 kernels the machine crashes
when pyhsical ram fills up. Swap is not used.
* I have checked swap space with badblocks, and all reports fine
* Swap is on

Strange modem behaviour

Hi All
Until recently, I had been using a Huawei E220 UMTS modem for my mobile
broadband. It had been working perfectly, but now a strange problem has
crept in somewhere. When I connect, after about 15-20 seconds after
making a successful connection, the GNOME toolbars become unresponsive,
however icons on the desktop and windows that are already open still
work. I can also still right click to bring up context menus. About
15-20 seconds after that, the whole desktop becomes unresponsive -
nothing works, except that the mouse pointer still moves - no buttons
though.
Its really got me baffled as to what could be causing this. I have
tried the Huawei E220 (USB) and also a Novatel Merlin U630 (PCMCIA)
modem, and on the dialler side, Vodafone Mobile Card Connect (which I
usually use) and UMTSMON. The same problem occurs regardless of the
modem or software. Connecting to the internet via the 'regular'
wireless network still works fine, so this leads me to think the
problem is with pppd or possibly wvdial and/or chat.
I am using F8, latest updates, no exotic/3rd party drivers. I was using
the ATI supplied divers but removed them, just to make sure.
Anyone have any suggestions?

ZendOptimizer breaks Apache/PHP

Hi,
I am using Fedora 8 running Apache and PHP.
I need ZendOptimizer to run a template that was encoded with Zen, so I
installed ZendOptimizer 3.3.3 (the version available for download from
Zend).
However, when I run PHP scripts under Apache most of the times nothing
appears on the browser and, the error_log shows a seg fault.
For example, I can't even run phpmyadmin.
Any idea ?

But after I start it from shell, I receive a lot of messages.

please help me get rid of compiz

I'm going nuts trying to keep compiz from running every time I launch
Gnome, KDE or XFCE. In Gnome, enable desktop effects is NOT set as
enabled. However in Gnome Compiz Preferences "Enable GL Desktop" is
checked. If I uncheck it, compiz is turned off for this session. If I
log out and log back in, it's checked again! I tried uninstalling all
of the compiz-related RPMs and then Gnome refused to go back to using
Metacity. I don't want it coming on all the time. I don't want it
coming on automatically in KDE and I ESPECIALLY don't want it coming on
in XFCE. If I'm using XFCE it means I want a low impact desktop.
Yet not matter what I do, I'm not the master of my desktop. This is
annoying the heck out of me. And when I go into gconf-editor and go to
apps->gnome-session-rh for window_manager it says metacity, not compiz!
I tried to get help on LQ,
(http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-desktop-74/gnome-has-become...)
but to no avail as the Gentoo guy didn't know where to look in Fedora.
Any help here would be EXTREMELY appreciated.

nvidia driver breaks with pretty much every F8 update

I simply don't understand why this is the case, but every time I upgrade
the . After some updates, the symlinks point to the wrong version, etc.
But I will only address my current situation. This is on a Dell D820.

nf_conntrack

Dear All,
What is the difference between ip_conntrack and nf_conntrack. I could set
ip_conntrack in /etc/systcl.conf before but now I could not. Then, I
thought, maybe it was changed to nf_conntrack and I also tried to set
nf_conntrack, nf_conntrack_max in the file but it still did not work.
Could someone guide me to the use of nf_conntrack related parameters? Or can
I still set ip_conntrack somewhere?
Here is all I could find in /proc:
# ls /proc/net/nf_conntrack*
/proc/net/nf_conntrack /proc/net/nf_conntrack_expect
