What will happen? Linux software raid autodetecting on an old array...
by Matthew Miller
Okay, so, here's the situation. Motherboard on my old computer (a Shuttle)
went out. Decided to get a new computer, because hey, it was four years old.
New computer came with two new SATA drives, which I've set up to to be
mirrored with software raid -- partitions /dev/md0 and /dev/md1.
All is good.
Now, had the exact same disk configuration in my old system. If plug in
those disks into the 3rd and 4th SATA ports, and boot, what will happen?
I hope the RAID autodetect system is smart enough to not get the old
/dev/md{0,1} mixed up with the new one and eat data. Right?
What Will Happen?
Thanks!

Keyboard in virt-manager
by Jochen Wiedmann
Hi,
I am doing my first attempts with virtualization on Fedora 8. I have
configured a fully virtualized guest and start a CentOS 4 ISO image.
Everything works fine up to the point where I've got to enter the FTP
server to use as an installation source: I can enter the characters
"ftp", but no dash, slash, or similar characters.
My desktop is GNOME running a german keyboard.
Anything I can do?
Thanks,
Jochen

Laptop HP Compaq 6710b suspend problem
by Bart van Kuik
Hi,
I'm using a Laptop HP Compaq 6710b running Fedora 8 with kernel
2.6.24.4-64.fc8.
When I suspend the laptop, and press the power button to revive it, the
screen backlight stays turned off. I.e. I can see that something is on
the screen but it's very dark.
I've tried uncommenting the lines in /etc/acpi/events/video.conf:
event=video.*
action=/usr/sbin/vbetool dpms on
but this didn't help.
I've got a workaround: when I press Ctrl-Alt-F1 to go to a virtual
console and then use Alt-LeftArrow to go to X again, the screen returns
to its normal status.
Any idea how I can get this automatically working?
Thanks,
Bart

NetworkManager: a tale of two laptops
by Timothy Murphy
I have two laptops, elizabeth and mary,
with identical PCMCIA WiFi cards, Orinoco Gold (firmware 6.04).
I have two APs, with ESSIDs (say) wrt and agere.
NM (NetworkManager) works fine on mary,
linking always to wrt on eth1.
NM never works on elizabeth,
trying for some reason to link to agere on eth1.
"service network" links elizabeth to agere on eth2.
So WiFi works perfectly on both machines,
but NM works only on one.
I have compared all the files I can think of,
and see no difference between the laptops.
I do not know where NM keeps the information it uses
on networks.
I would like to tell it to try to link to wrt on elizabeth,
but as I say do not know where it keeps this preference.
The documentation on NM, such as there is,
says that "NM just works",
but unfortunately does not give any hint of what to do
if NM "just doesn't work".

Fedora Core 8 and dvd::rip from freshrpm's problem
by Joseph L. Casale
After a clean install of fc8, a full yum update, I then add freshrpms and install dvdrip. I then setup a project, rip the dvd, but the preview fails. I have searched their forum and found some issues but it seems non apply, there is no actual error other then that the file isn't created?
Anyone know what could be wrong?
Thanks!

Virtualizing Existing XP Install
by Tod
Warning, virtualization newbie...
I've got an install of XP pro, service pack 2 on a standalone machine.
Since I don't use it for more than a few apps I'd like to try out Linux
virtualization with Linux being the primary O/S and windows running on a
virtual machine.
I imagine I'll need to move the windows install maybe using parted,
create a new partition to install linux on, get it installed, along with
the virtualization software, and then get it to fire up windows without
it knowing its running virtually. I've searched around for instructions
on doing this and really haven't found anything useful.
Is my plan valid? I'd like to avoid re-installing XP but I will if I
need to. I plan on sticking with Fedora so I'd appreciate
recommendations on virtualization software. This is running on an old
AMD Athlon machine so no dual processing going on.
Any pointers, tutorials, or suggestions for doing this on an existing
Fedora machine would be appreciated too. I have a couple of other boxes
I might like to try virtualization on.
TIA - Tod

Firewire Stack in F8 Howto Wanted
by agraham
Hi,
Can any one, point me to a Howto that explains how to use the new
Firewire stack in F7/8,
I'm trying to get my Mini DV camera to work with via Firewire, actually
was hoping to use the Camara with ZoneMinder.
lspci shows:
08:08.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Texas Instruments TSB43AB22/A
IEEE-1394a-2000 Controller (PHY/Link)
lsmod shows:
firewire_ohci 19137 0
firewire_core 36353 1 firewire_ohci
crc_itu_t 5953 1 firewire_core
However, no devices in /dev/fwX appear to be created ?
dvgrab does not see a device connected:
#dvgrab
Error: no camera exists
I checked the fedora documentation, but could not find any docs on the
subject.
BTW: I'm using kernel 2.6.24.2-7.fc8PAE
TIA.
Albert.

k3b verify written data fails
by Michael Schwendt
This is very unusual and hopefully not another regression in the F8 kernel
updates. :/
Burning an ISO to CD with k3b and choosing "verify written data" here
fails in the MD5 checksum check. This used to work. In fact, I never burn
CDs/DVDs without that option. But it no longer works, although the burnt
image is fine. I can read out the ISO image with "readcd" and get the
expected checksum.
Has anyone else been hit by this, too?

kvm or xen on F8 ?
by Matto
Hi Guys,
I have been following the doc at
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Docs/Fedora8VirtQuickStart to set up kvm. (I
first started with xen, but soon discovered the lack of nvidia drivers for
the xen kernel on domain 0 -- bring on F9!?)
Anyway I didn't get far. I have an error message that looks like this:
[root@localhost ~]# virsh -c qemu:///system list
Attempting to gain the privilege for org.libvirt.unix.manage.
** (process:6820): WARNING **: Error doing GetSessionForUnixProcess on
ConsoleKit: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name
org.freedesktop.ConsoleKit was not provided by any .service files
polkit-grant-helper: it only makes sense to run polkit-grant-helper as
non-root
Failed to gain the privilege for org.libvirt.unix.manage.
Id Name State
----------------------------------
[root@localhost ~]#
I don't have much of a clue as to what this is about (?). Perhaps someone
can give me a hint. I have a very vanilla install of F8 with a dash of livna
on a P4. Let me know if you need any more info.
Thanks!

Evolution goes deaf/dumb
by Robert G. (Doc) Savage
Does anyone know what would cause my Evolution client to suddenly lose its
ability to send/receive mail from my ISP? The "Send/Receive" button on the
upper tool bar is grayed out. So are the File -> Send/Receive and F9
options.
