F9 xorg.conf doesn't set gamma

The xorg.conf file at the end of this message works, except for the Monitor section, which was just added to set gamma. Entering: $ xgamma -gamma 0.80 from a console works fine. Here is the non-working xorg.conf file. NM alternatives for wireless

Are there any alternatives to NetwokManager for managing wireless connections? I don't care if it's got gui or cli as long as it lets me configure multiple connections and choose from among them. NM itself did its thing until I started to run icewm from ~/.Xclients - I guess this prevented starting some gnome thingy that NM needs. Never mind, I didn't care for NM's "don't ask, connect" policy anyway. I tried wifi-radar: it basically hangs while trying to establish the connection. wlassistant looks more promising: it's more configurable, and it at least gave up trying to connect with an error message: iwconfig_ap: /sbin/iwconfig ath0 ap 00:18:F8:42:03:3E ==>stderr: Failed to connect to wpa_supplicant - wpa_ctrl_open: No such file or directory Using wpa_supplicant driver: wext WPA client started. Waiting for status... CONNECTION FAILED. disconnect: /sbin/iwconfig ath0 mode managed key off ap off essid off The only way I can connect now is starting nm-applet, telling it a few times that it shouldn't ask for the passphrase for my gnome-keyring (I didn't know I had one!), then giving it the WPA key of the AP it's supposed to connect to. (It's nice that NM protects the key (if this is what it does), too bad it protects it from me, too.) All this is on an eee pc. Andras

FC 9 Installation IOError: [Errno 5] Input/output error

Hallo, I try to install Fedora 9 on a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Xi2550 using a DVD. I use text bases installation due to Radeon HD2700. When the installation program installs the rpm-packages from the DVD, it stops after some hundred packages and gives a long python-related error message ending by IOError: [Errno 5] Input/output error Then, the installation terminates... Is there any solution or workaround for this issue? Best regards, Daniel

A question for the open source people

What I have always been curious about is this: how many of you actually take advantage of the open source? In other words, how many of you really take the source code and do something with it? Personally I don't. I can program in C, i'm pretty good at it. I've just never felt the need to alter the software I use. I'm fine with waiting for the new versions as they come out. I'm really not trying to start a fight. I am just curious. I love free software. I think the free software movement has enabled a lot of people who could not afford to operate a computer to do so. Having Linux source code available has trained a generation of system programmers. There's no disputing the value of free, open source software. Anyway, that's my question. Something is wrong with my desktop

Hi I have a F9 that was installed from scratch and is fully updated but there seems to be something fundamentally amiss with the desktop. The symptoms are as follows - Evolutions hangs from time to time. Usually when a new message arrives, but not always. I have to kill it and when I bring it back up it displays the newly arrived message just fine. - If the screensaver kicks in it is not always possible to unlock the desktop. Sometimes the screen just remains black (except the mouse pointer is visible). The only way to get out of it is to press ctrl-alt-backspace. That brings back the gdm login screen, but it is still not possible to login. After entering the password the system just seems to do a recycle and comes back to the login window. A reboot is required to get things back to normal. - It is impossible to browse smb shares with nautilus. It varies how far one gets, but I've never been able to copy over a file from an smb share. On the other hand if I mount a share from the command line and then open it up in nautilus it works just fine. - /var/log/messages is littered with gnome-keyring-daemon[2677]: couldn't read 4 bytes from client: - I've tried to create a completely new user, but it has the same problems. Any suggestion on how to solve this would be greatly appreciated. /Markus

Intel duel head problems

I have narrowed my slowness issues to the updated xserver and duel head setup. When running my laptop with i915GM alone the display is nice and snappy. When connecting a vga monitor configured for spanning duel mode both displays are sluggish. Window redraws and scrolling are slow. Also in duel mode I no longer have direct rendering. I have opened bug reports on this. Has anyone seen similar problems? -Thanks

SEtroubleshooting (./.xsession-errors) ??

Hi; ERROR message in SEtroubleshooting. SELinux is preventing the pam_timestamp_c from using potentially mislabeled files (/root/.xsession-errors). [SELinux is in permissive mode, the operation would have been denied but was permitted due to permissive mode.]SELinux has denied pam_timestamp_c access to potentially mislabeled file(s) (/root/.xsession-errors). This means that SELinux will not allow pam_timestamp_c to use these files. It is common for users to edit files in their home directory or tmp directories and then move (mv) them to system directories. The problem is that the files end up with the wrong file context which confined applications are not allowed to access. My Fedora 9 was recently fresh installed which would have included a new .xsession-errors. Contrary to the error message, I have not changed, moved or besmirched root's .xsession-errors filein any way I know of. I am willing to follow SELinux's suggestion "If you want pam_timestamp_c to access this files, you need to relabel them using restorecon -v '/root/.xsession-errors'. You might want to relabel the entire directory using restorecon -R -v '/root'. " If I can confirm I am not dealing with a bug. Could some one point me in the right direction for installing and using ssl vpn? I've been using ssh to connect to my server but now it's going to be behind a firewall that uses ssl vpn for connections. Rick B.

Upgrade fc7 to fc8 not possible with yum

Upgrade from fc7 to fc8 is not possible by yum because 2 packages are not available to update.How to overcome this problem?
