F14 =)
by Andre Costa
Hi,
just for the record, installing F14 x86_64 was pretty painless for me.
Installed from scratch (kept /home partition, reformatted everything
else, as I've been doing since F10), upgraded, installed my usual
additional packages, and I was up and running in less than an hour. If
it wasn't for the annoying nvidia bug
(https://bugzilla.rpmfusion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1469) it would have
been a flawless installation, but even that didn't spoil the fun.
Kudos and thanks to all involved for another great release =)
Regards,
Andre

ssh on F14 complains when I run emacs with X11 port forwarding
by Sam Varshavchik
On F14's desktop, from gnome-terminal, I ssh to another host with port
forwarding (ForwardX11 yes, and ForwardX11Trusted yes). On the other host, I
start emacs. Emacs appears to come up properly, with its window tunneled,
and opening on my desktop. Everything looks normal, but I notice that the
original gnome-terminal has a burst of about half-a-dozen ugly "connect :
Connection refused" complaints.
Some experimentation shows that this error is not coming from the host where
I started emacs, but from the ssh client I started on my desktop. strace
shows this:
connect(7, {sa_family=AF_FILE, path=@"/tmp/.X11-unix/X0"}, 110) = -1
ECONNREFUSED (Connection refused)
close(7) = 0
write(2, "connect : Connection refused\r\n", 30) = 30
The ssh client is attempting to make a connection to this AF_FILE socket,
gets blown off, and whines to stderr.
Now, as far as I can tell, emacs appears to be running fine, but something
is broken.
fuser shows that /tmp/.X11-unix/X0 is held open by Xorg:
[root@lc2440 ~]# fuser /tmp/.X11-unix/X0
/tmp/.X11-unix/X0: 7524
[root@lc2440 ~]# ps -ef | grep 7524
root 7524 7520 2 23:43 tty7 00:00:13 /usr/bin/Xorg :0 -br
-verbose -auth /var/run/gdm/auth-for-gdm-zEGonr/database -nolisten tcp
Xorg has this socket open, but ssh can't connect to it. Not sure what the
bug is, here. Who should get this bug in bugzilla?

I want OO.o support, not Go-OO from Novell - Any statement from Fedora or RedHat?
by Fernando Cassia
Hi there,
I started using Linux back in ´99 or thereabouts. After a few years
and switching between several distros (including Caldera OpenLinux,
SuSE, and Sun Java Desktop System R2) I learned a few things:
1. That I liked Gnome more than KDE
2. That I hated Novell and its collaboration with Microsoft, along
with its endorsement and advocacy for "Mono" (a project always playing
catch-up with Microsoft´s .Net platform and as a side effect stealing
mindshare from Java).
3. That I prefer a company that doesn´t work against Java developers.
So, I ended up running Fedora. First a Fedora derivative (Blag) and
then Fedora 11. Then 12, and then 13. So far so good.
Now, having said that, I didn´t like the hysteria surrounding
OpenOffice.org, and I think Oracle will do an OK job advancing the
open source project going forward.
I also don´t trust Novell a single bit, and I think sooner rather than
later, they´ll end up polluting "LibreOffice" with Mono. I don´t want
that.
So, here I am, a happy Fedora user, but who´d like to continue using
OpenOffice.org. What chance is there (if any) of an end user like me
of influencing Fedora direction to keep supporting OpenOffice.org ?.
Who makes those kind of decisions? Has Fedora or RedHat made any
statement wrt OO.o going forward?.
Thanks

F-14 upgrade -
by Bob Goodwin
I've upgraded this F13 system to F14 from a dvd without difficulty but I
have two annoying problems:
1. I can't copy/paste using the usual two buttons.
2. I need to set the optimum screen resolution for this older Dell
LCD but don't know how to display the model number to Google for the
spec's. Yes I know I could get a flashlight and magnifier and read it
off the back but that would mean disturbing my physical setup, and I am
spoiled ...
Any suggestions appreciated.

GIMP Tool Install Problem
by Frank Tanner III
I am having a problem installing a GIMP tool that I am having problems
with. I'm hoping that, even though this isn't a GIMP mailing list,
someone can assist me as I am trying to install it from source and the
error is coming from LD and appears to be an issue with something in
glibc.
When I attempt to install it by using gimptool --install fix-ca.c I get
the following error:
/usr/bin/ld: /tmp/cckhAeee.o: undefined reference to symbol
'floor@(a)GLIBC_2.0'
/usr/bin/ld: note: 'floor@(a)GLIBC_2.0' is defined in DSO /lib/libm.so.6
so try adding it to the linker command line
/lib/libm.so.6: could not read symbols: Invalid operation
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
I am not sure what additional information that you need to assist in
troubleshooting this.
Thank you.

Convert DRM infested EPUB file to Kindle supported format
by Steven P. Ulrick
Hello Everyone,
I just bought a EPUB ebook from Barnes & Noble, hoping I could convert it from
the EPUB format (which the Kindle does not support) into something that the
Kindle DOES support. Calibre gave me an error message about having to use a 3rd
party tool to remove the DRM...
So, if anyone has any ideas that use (preferably) free tools, I would love to
know...
