Image thumbnails
by antonio montagnani
If I shoot raw with my reflex digital camera and I transfer files to my
computer, I can see thumbnails (both in DGN and PEF format), but I
cannot see them when on SD card on an external hard disk.
Why?

display in fc13/fc14
by Patrick Dupre
Hello,
In a X seesion I am unable to run in 1280x1024 will it works fine in
fc11.
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82Q963/Q965
Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 02)
I was able to set the correct display by using xrandr with the options:
--newmode and -addmode
but is only works for the present session, then the mode that I
added is gone.
I tried to mode the mode in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but it does not work
either.
It is probably due to the cancel out of the mode that I previously
created. I get: "could not apply the stored configuration for monitor"
In addition in fc14, there is not display setting ! is it a bug !
Thank.

USB drive not mounted after reboot
by Robert Moskowitz
After rebooting my FC12 system, my Seagate 1.5TB drive was not mounted.
I had to unplug and plug in the USB cable to get the system to recognize
the drive.
What can I do to insure this drive is mounted after a reboot or powerup?

Firefox and Sun Java
by Paolo Galtieri
I installed the sun java package yesterday. Today I set up a link
ln -s /usr/java/latest/jre/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so libnpjp2.so
in ~/.mozilla/plugins
to pull in the java plugin. After I restarted FF the plugin was not visible
and I got a SElinux alert
The firefox application attempted to make its stack executable. This is a
potential security problem.
This should never ever be necessary. Stack memory is not executable on most
OSes these days
and this will not change. Executable stack memory is one of the biggest
security problems. An
execstack error might in fact be most likely raised by malicious code.
Applications are sometimes
coded incorrectly and request this permission. The SELinux Memory Protection
Tests web page
explains how to remove this requirement. If firefox does not work and you
need it to work, you can
configure SELinux temporarily to allow this access until the application is
fixed. Please file a bug report.
Any ideas?

How to "eject" an automatically mounted USB device
by Steven P. Ulrick
Hello Everyone,
I am running Fedora 13, and I am using KDE as my desktop environment.
I would like to be able to charge my new (3rd generation) Kindle on my computer,
but I get an error on the Kindle that reads like this:
If you want to use your Kindle, please eject your Kindle from your computer.
Currently, your Kindle is not charging.
I can get this to work in a virtual machine of Windows XP that I have installed
in Virtual Box. This is how I do it (remember that the Kindle is mounted in KDE
right now. I can browse the directories on it, and even add new files that show
up when I unplug the Kindle)
1. Start my virtual machine of Windows XP.
Command:
VirtualBox --fullscreen --startvm "Windows XP Pro 001"
2. In Virtual Box, do the following:
"Devices | USB Devices | Amazon Kindle [0100]"
This causes my Kindle to be released by Fedora/KDE, and mounts it in the virtual
machine of Windows XP.
3. Look at the screen of the Kindle, and I get the same message quoted above.
4. In "My Computer" in the virtual machine of Windows XP, right click on "Kindle
(E:)" and select "Eject"
5. The result is that now my Kindle is charging, and I can use it while it is
plugged into my computer. Of course, if I want to manually add any files, I need
to remount the Kindle. But that's OK...
So, some of you are thinking, why don't you just do the following:
1. Click on the "Device Notifier Applet"
2. Select the Kindle
3. Click on the little "Eject" icon that is on the right hand side of the
section that tells me what actions I can perform with that device.
Well, I don't do that, because when I try, I USED to get an error that said
something about not being able to eject that device because some other program
was using a file on it. Today, it just did something new: when I clicked on the
"Eject" icon, I did not get an error message. Also, the "Eject" icon changed to
a different icon. The tooltip says this "Click to access this device from other
applications." Unfortunately, the Kindle itself does not think that it is
ejected, and I still have the aforementioned error message on it's screen...
So, on Fedora 13, I cannot natively charge or use my Kindle when it is plugged
into my computer. But, on the same Fedora 13 system, I can do EXACTLY what I
want to do inside of a virtual instance of Windows XP running inside of Virtual
Box.
I have a feeling that this is probably going to be a real simple thing to fix,
but I can't seem to figure out how, and I have not been able to find anything to
help me on the internet...
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Where to set default root for wifi in Fedora 14?
by Colin Paul Adams
My airport (wifi on Macbook Air) is working fine now fedora 14 is
installed (hooray!). But the default root is not enabled.
I can do so by typing as root:
route add default gw 192.168.254.254 eth0
but I don't understand why this is not done automatically by
NetworkManager.
So where can I configure this? I think /etc/sysconfig/network or
rc.local will be too early, as the device will not have started by
then.
