& how often did that either break or get snarled up, just coz the
humidity had dropped???? We suggested that Field Engineers should
inspect all the young lady operators for *nasty* nylon clothing & remove
it.... Was never accepted!!!!!
Ahh the good old days..... 16k of memory took 2 to remove it, 64k (the
system max) needed 3 extra wardrobes.....
Have fun reminiscing

About programing, a general question
by Parshwa Murdia
hi,
If one has to start from the scratch, from the zeroth level to do the
programing, which programing language one should start with? In the ocean of
the languages, to start with is really very typical. Can one justify it.
Some say Python but again they say it is Perl which is better every time
then the Python. Some say to start with C or C++ but again some emphasis to
use Java or C#. Many say to go for .Net and VB or COBOL and some say to
learn web based programing like HTML, PHP, ASP.Net. In this ocean who is
just starting to learn which one he should prefer?
Many say that what is the purpose of learning, then I say that to have the
basic understanding of how exactly we can handle the machines like the CPU.
Not to generate the big projects for the management processes, not even
banking system but to know the basic of programing like how to handle the
machines at the first, for that purpose, for the the scratch level purpose
and for the one which is good even for Linux, what programing language
should one like me, initiate?

Boot usb live image, even if bios doesn't support it?
by Clemens Eisserer
Hi,
I have a quite old laptop (2003) with a crappy bios, which doesn't
allow booting from USB and the laptop's dvd drive is broken.
Is there any way to write some bootloader-code on the HDD, which then
loads the live-cd from USB?
Thank you in advance, Clemens

Aria2 in our update/install process?
by Zoltan Hoppar
Hi,
I have red an very interesting article at Matt Parnell
(http://www.mattparnell.com) about how can be have faster downloads -
not just the updates for the package manager, and I really like it.
I'm sure that this artifact could be very useful where speed is a must
- especially at preupgrade. Well, after I have seen this - if I good
understand this - the based technique is slicing up the downloaded
data to pieces and so gets faster (multithread ftp). But I have seen 2
different scripts - one is using aria, an another is using axel.
That's pretty neat. However, in my opinion aria2 is much better for
this purpose - but the questions are:
- Is preupgrade using aria2 to make it faster the upgrade?
- Is there any plugin for yum that uses this technique?
- is it possible to combine presto and multithread ftp update (or
torrent technique) to get faster downloads?
Cheers,
Zoltan

upg fedora13->14 via preupgrade went terribly wrong
by Donald Russell
Well, I've really buggered things up... I ran preupgrade on my Fedora 13
system with the goal of upgrading to Fedora 14. Fairly early on in the
process I was warned my /boot partition was low on space but it was OK if I
had a wired connection... OK... continue.
On reboot, a dialog popped up about "inconsistent lvm information" and I
could either ignore it, or reinitialize the volume.
I chose the later thinking it would be a "repair" operation... next thing I
know it complains there is no root system to upgrade...
I tried coming up in rescue mode, but that did not find anything to mount
under /mnt/sysimage.
So... my big question is: what are my options to recover the disk? There was
only one logical volume that covered the whole partition. Is there a way I
can just create the lvm again? All the data should be there.
Help! And Merry Christmas.
Cheers

kde slow to start after a crash
by Walter Cazzola
Dear Linuxers,
I've a quite frustrating problem, it is the second time that my PC
freezes and after resetting the PC KDE starts very slowly (it is taking
more or less 20 minutes to be fully loaded and responsive) and reboot
doesn't help.
The first time I have solved by canceling all the configuration files of
KDE (both .kde and .kderc) and reconfiguring the whole thing. This is an
experience that I'd prefer to avoid.
Any idea about how to solve the issue?
My system is FC13 up to date with KDE 4.5.3, nvidia card and kernel
2.6.34.7-63. I can provide any piece of log if you address me to what to
look for.
Thanks for the help
Walter

[OT] Just wanted to share... (Calyphrox 4.0)
by Manuel Escudero
Hi fedora users!
Today is a very important day for me because the new version of one
of my web projects has been released, it's name is Calyphrox and is
a webproxy that is powered by Google App Engine. Calyphrox let you
to anonimyze your web browsing, by filtering your real information; By
using calyphrox you browse the web like you're on a Google Computer
with Google's IP and data, not yours. it also has a encrypted connection
feature and full compatibility with most pages. By browsing with Calyphrox
you also get more speed while surfing the web and it has some additional
features like URL shortener & Expander, a Whois service, Free domains
service, a Sandboxing service for suspicious sites and of course, an IP
Checker.
Calyphrox also has an API available to play with it and in few words it can
help you to visit some blocked sites at school or work :D So if you're
interested
in trying it, go to:
http://www.calyphrox.tk/
<http://www.calyphrox.tk/>Become a fan at Facebook and recommend it!
Cheers! Sending positive FC13 KDE Energy to your computers!!
