no sound from external speakers
by Ben Miller
Hello,
This is my first post to the list, and I've searcehd the list archives
and the usual places for an answer to this problem, but haven't found
one. I'm running a brand new installation of F12 on a Compaq/HP laptop.
At first, sound was coming out of the laptop speakers and only through
external speakers if I turned the volume very loud. And then it didn't
play out through the subwoofer. In an attempt to fix this, I upgraded
ALSA drivers to the most recent version. Now, I get nothing from my
external speakers. My sound card is: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9
Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03). Any help is much appreciated.

OT Software Review Code
by Peter J. Stieber
Sorry for the off-topic post.
I'm looking for the following in an open source project...
Imagine using bugzilla hooks, or hooks in Trac, or a new piece of
"software review code" I'll call SRC, to implement the following...
When a code change is proposed, make a new entry in SRC. Describe the
change, add a commit message for the change, and add a patch that
implements the change.
Next SRC enters the "patch review state". In this state, SRC runs the
patch through an automatic patch evaluation process that has hooks to
check the style, build, and run tests. If the patch fails this test,
the patch submitter is asked to resubmit the patch by SRC via email.
If the patch passes the automatic patch submission test, it goes to the
"code review state". For this state, the SRC program reviews all
directories and source modules modified by the patch and determines a
point value based on a point value assigned to the directories and files
in the code base.
The point values are used to determine the level of review required
before a commit to the version code repository is allowed. Usually,
commit privileges are based on a simple binary decision based on the
code that is being changed and the changes account name.
Here's an example of the proposed system. Someone commits a patch that
touches the following directories with the following point values:
Application/src 1
Lib/Math 6
Lib/GUI 5
SRC would look at this data and use the worst case required point total.
In this case it would be 6 for the change made to the Lib/Math directory.
Now imagine anyone registered in the SRC database could review the
patch, but patch reviewers were assigned a "code reviewer quality".
Account Name | Code Reviewer Quality
--------------------------------------
cppexpert | 5
upandcomer | 3
newbie1 | 1
newbie2 | 1
newbie3 | 1
newbie4 | 1
newbie5 | 1
unqualified | 0
--------------------------------------
Also imagine SRC has a check box that reviewers can check to give their
review approval to a patch. If they don't give their approval, the
submitter must negotiate with the reviewer and possibly resubmit the
patch. If this occurs the patch must pass the "automatic patch review"
again and review continues.
Once the sum of Code Reviewer Quality points for reviewers that have
approved the patch is greater than or equal to 6, the patch is tested
one more time to see if updates are needed, and if it passes this final
test, the code is committed using the account of the original patch
submitter and the commit message they entered in an earlier phase of the
process.
In this case if the "cppexpert" and anyone other than "unqualified"
reviewed an approved the patch, it would be approved and committed by
SRC. Reviews and approvals by the "upandcomer" account plus three
additional "newbie*" reviews would also commit the patch.
There could also be an optional "software design/architecture review
state" added up front that disallows the submission of a patch until the
proposed changes have passed a similar point based review. A person in
the SRC system may be assigned different Quality values for
different tasks. For instance the "cppexpert" might have a 5 rating for
"Code Reviewer Quality", but a 2 rating for "Design Reviewer Quality".
For "designexpert" it might be the opposite.
Does anyone know of such a beast that is available as open source?
Where should I post such a question?
Pete
PS I currently implement this by restricting commit privilege to
critical directories to myself to force peer code review.
Unfortunately, this means I'm the only member of the team that can
commit in these directories. So there is currently a binary system that
says "only I can commit here" which means "I want the code committed to
this directory to be thoroughly reviewed". The only way I could
guarantee thorough code review was to lock everyone else out and review
everything myself. I want a system that will change this.

NoMachine setup
by John Aldrich
I'd like to use NoMachine to access my F11 box at home. Currently I'm
tunneling VNC over SSH to do so, but it would be nice to have one app to do
it all.
I'm afraid I'm not very good at reading page after page of generic
instructions. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a good "how-to" for setting
up NoMachine on Fedora?
Thanks!

Thanks to all. After Rodolfo's reply, I think I know how to fix the
problem: to do the includes that are missing.

smartcard user authentication
by John Wendel
Anyone know how to configure Fedora to use a smartcard for user
login/authentication?
I know that pam has a smartcard module, but I have no idea how to use
it. Documentation on the web seems to be pretty old, probably obsolete.
A pointer to a web site with working instructions would be much
appreciated. I can ditch my Windows box at work if I can get this working.

[Solved... but I still wonder what happened] DVD doesn't play
by Marcel Rieux
Since nobody seemed to report a problem playing DVDs, I decided to check my
settings.
Smplayer and Gmplayer were both set to play DVDs from /dev/dvd
I checked and there was no /dev/dvd. So, I did:
ls -l /dev/dvd*
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 3 2010-03-24 12:52 /dev/dvd1 -> sr0
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 3 2010-03-24 12:52 /dev/dvdrw1 -> sr0
I set both players to dvd1 and everything is back to normal.
I never changed these settings. Not a chance, mainly in *two* media
players... that worked perfectly.
If I'm not hacked, how is this possible? I used a USB flash drive recently
and sometimes removed it without unmounting. Can this have caused the
problem? The drive is mounted on /dev/sdb1.
Personally, I'm really without a clue.

Xorg server version?
by Ed Greshko
OK, I'm confused....
On F12 yum info for xorg-x11-server-Xorg shows...
Name : xorg-x11-server-Xorg
Version : 1.7.6
Summary : Xorg X server
URL : http://www.x.org
When going go http://www.x.org one reads....
The current X.Org release is X11R7.5
<http://www.x.org/wiki/Releases/7.5>. The next major release will be
X11R7.6 <http://www.x.org/wiki/Releases/7.6>.
How does 1.7.6 compare with 7.5 or 7.6?
I'm asking since the current release of opensuse 11.2 has
Name: xorg-x11-server
Version: 7.4-61.63.1
And the problem that I see with the nVidia drivers and compositing
doesn't exist on opensuse. I get 3D effects...no problem.

Looking out for stale mirrors
by Matt Domsch
FYI. On Monday 3/22, I changed how Fedora's MirrorManager treats
"stale" mirrors (mirrors with valid, but not quite up-to-date,
content). Previously, mirrors could be at most 7 days stale, and
still be offered via the mirrorlists, to yum. Now, that is at most 2
days stale. This allows for sufficient propogation delay for new
updates, while ensuring that our users are getting the latest updates
that are available.
If you see yum frequently falling back to use another mirror, please
let mirror-admin(a)fedoraproject.org know which mirror you see it
falling back from (the "stale" mirror), so we can investigate with the
mirror owner.
Thanks,
Matt
