Hmm. That I did not know. I'll try rmmod'ing the kvm modules and
checking what happens. Virtualbox does not load any modules AFAICT. It
just runs as a service against internal kernel structures...which I had
always assumed were accessed through the kvm modules.
To the original OP.
No need to reinstall at this point. If you have say 20G-30G of drive
space in your F12 space, you can install VirtualBox, make a 20G virtual
hard drive image space (basically anywhere in the file structure,
although a non-critical partition is always good.. /opt or /video for
instance) and install Win into that space. VirtualBox handles that space
as a virtual hard drive. The Win instance thinks that that space is
'C:'. When everything is up and running for a while, you can consider
re-formatting the drive to delete your present Win structure. As far as
the machine is concerned (pre re-formatting), you will still have a dual
boot 'first' setup. Only your F12 VirtualBox manager 'knows' that you
have a Win instance which you will 'virtually' boot into.
It's actually kinda weird to have a Win desktop, sitting on top of your
Fedora desktop, but that's how it works!
And it's NOT difficult...picky maybe.
Most difficult part I ran across was getting printing working from the
Win guest.

I removed VirtualBox but it didn't change anything. I wonder if having Google-Chrome could have any effect? I can't understand why I am the only one having this problem. I found some other messages with the "couldn't load XPCOM " message on google, but they were last year and there was no solution I could see.
I appreciate the help.

Windows partition?
by Paul F. Johnson
Hi,
I've been trying to install XP using qemu for almost 24 hours now. I
have one specific task that I need XP for (Winforms design). I can't get
Visual C# 2005 to work under Wine or Crossover Office so I need to get
something working.
I have a shed load of space on a secondary drive, so I was thinking of
making a 20Gb partition on it (as FAT32), booting from an XP disc and
installing onto there.
I don't know if it will be a problem installing to a secondary drive
rather than primary, so advise is needed here. Is it safe to do this or
am I going to trash things by doing it?

I finally got straight on what you wanted for strace.
I have attached a gzipped copy, but I don't know if it will go through the list, and I lost track of who wanted it. If it doesen't go through let me know and I will send it direct.
It makes absolutely no sense to me at all.

Problem with virt-manager
by Paul F. Johnson
Hi,
I've managed to get virt-manager to run under rawhide (after the parted
problem was fixed), and can create the fake drive and install XP.
Only problem is that when XP does the reset after the first part of the
install, I get
Booting from Hard Disk...
A disk read error occurred.
Any ideas on this? I'm using the default settings for everything.

Fox News Channels videos won't play
by Temlakos
I've come back to this issue of the Fox News Channel videos not wanting
to play, because perhaps I have some more information that might provide
a clue.
Fox News Channel hosts a number of videos, and provides an embedding
link to each one. About an hour ago, I went to find one. When my Fedora
12/Firefox 3.5.8 setup wouldn't play nice, I went to another machine
that had Windows XP on it. I was able to play the video there, and to
get the embedding script. I got it and pasted it into an article I wrote.
And when I went to display my article, guess what? The video wouldn't play.
Here is the link to the article I wrote, that has the embedded video:
<http://www.examiner.com/x-28973-Essex-County-Conservative-Examiner~y2010m...>
Here is the embedding URL I used:
<script type="text/javascript"
src="http://video.foxnews.com/v/embed.js?id=4106724&w=400&h=249"></script><noscript>Watch
the latest news video at <a
href="http://video.foxnews.com/">video.foxnews.com</a></noscript>
And now: here is what that script embed.js contains:
if(document.domain.indexOf('rightscoop') < 0) { document.write(''); }
And that's it.
Every other video site I have visited will play nice--YouTube, Google
Video, everyone. What is wrong with Fox?
Am I missing a plugin, perhaps? Here's the output of about:plugins on my
browser:

New Kernel will not boot
by Lawrence E Graves
I am having trouble with the installing of the new kernel release about
2 days ago. When I install it and reboot my system it stops at the
Fedora sign in the middle of the screen. It is hard for me to explain
exactly what is happening because I am not good with the technical terms
used.

Why? If it's the root of the problem... Besides "others" are free to make their own decisions, are they not?
As it turned out, the OP's update/F12 problem was related to his own settings and not selinux, but initially insufficient info was given to discern that. However, my F12 update problem was. And it wasn't the first time. To date, I don't know if it's fixed. Perhaps on my next update, I'll "enable" selinux and see what happens.

I used this kind of approach some years ago with VMware workstaion installed
on a Linux partition, starting WIndows vm directly from another partition
containing Windows 2k,
where I used hardware profiles to select if I would start it as native or as
vm
it was not officially supported but worked very well ;-)
But I think is not feasible in Linux with Kvm, at least right now
What you would try to get is a sort of "in place" P2V...
You could follow something like this outlined by Richard WM Jones:
http://rwmj.wordpress.com/2009/10/13/poor-mans-p2v/
where the dd process could be directly from within Linux from the win
partition device to a local file on it
and then verify if you can start Windows guest.
probably it could help to start creating a new hardware profile from within
native w2k, so that you start then from it the first time in virtual....
if you have proprietary startup things (such as ati control panel or other
hw controlling gasgets..) you should disable them in virtual env, eventually
starting before in safe mode...
An introduction to hw profiles here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/225810
Just a starting point...

sync write to .bash_history file?
by Gianluca Cecchi
Hello,
I remember "my" plain old days (1995) when working on HP-UX typing on DCE
terminals connected by MUX to the Unix host...
At that time there were several guys using the same administrative root
account at the same time with the Korn shell... and you had a synchronous
write to the history file, by default .sh_history.
I was at my first steps on the Unix/Linux world: I remember trying to
install a Slackware 3.0 bought by Yggdrasil and asking about support for
Matrox in X Windows System to the kernel list and in about a couple of hours
getting an answer with two possible solutions, directly from Alan Cox... and
the one I tried worked like a charm, obviously... ;-)
Ok, come back to today days....
I see that in Linux, on Fedora, but in general with some flavours and
distros, it seems that write operations to the .bash_history are not
"consistent", in the sense that sometimes you will not find all the commands
in it..... and sometimes they are not aligned (a sort of .swp file effect
like in vim...?)
Is there a particular reason?
Is there a possible configuration giving a consistent and synchronous fill
of this file? Eventually eliminating cache things if this could be the
cause...
I know that the correct general approach is to go without administrative
accounts and only using personal ones and something like sudo to escalate
privileges, but in certain cases it could be useful in my opinion to have
this.
Ok, during old days and proprietary Unix systems one could run something
like
HISTFILE=/tmp/foo
export HISTFILE
and go on... but all in all you still got the first comand...
Or one could tamper with the .sh_history file with a direct edit....
Just to know in what Linux is different with them and if able to change its
default behaviour
Thanks in advance,
Gianluca
