Problem on upgrading Fedora14 from 13.
by Cricket Long
After I upgraded my Fedora 14 from 13 with a local ISO image on my local drive,
I noticed that only some info such as one in "System->About this computer" was
turned to indicate something about Fedora14 while "uname -r" didn't show info
about fedora 14 instead of the previous one and no new source directories in
/usr/src/ were created. I am wondering whether my fedora13 was upgraded to 14?

I'm asking help for my project - If you're interested get contacted with me
by Zoltan Hoppar
Hi Guys,
Currently I see my project well and running - thanks to Pitivi (and
their debuggers, devs) - but I would like to have some help from our
Fedora community. I have an small audioclip what has been released by
an BR musician namely Carlos Amoyan (huge thanks), and received
permission from NASA itself (Goddard Space Center) to use their videos
to our AD marketing clip. I have my project stalled at in the middle
of planning, because of Pitivi wasn't so stable to make the cuts, and
the rendering. Right now I would like to finish our first moveclip
dedicated for Fedora, and let it see to be born. What I need to be
done? Well, I need some resources that I could cut into this - Like
inserts with about our beloved OS (in few minutes), and community
presentation talks, different recorded desktops, 3D cube, menu parts.
and our projects (or their logos) and that would like to be used as
clipart....to present the diversity of Fedora. The format must be
THEORA/OGG 720x576 with 25 fps / 2 channel 44,1k audio.
So, if you're interested please get contacted me, and I put together
to FOSDEM if everything goes well.
Cheers,
Zoltan

Broadcom 4321 wireless suddenly stopped working
by Claude Jones
*This is a fairly new Fedora 14 install and I did have the wireless
working for quite awhile, so all the fwcutter and other
pre-configuration stuff was done.
*This install was for a friend and he says it worked fine for awhile and
then stopped when he took his computer to the office and back home.
*I ran yum update and installed lots of updates yesterday, and after
that, it started working and stayed working through multiple reboots.
*When my friend arrived to pick it up, we did one final reboot and it
came up dead again, with no evidence of the adapter in the network
manager applet
*We're using the akmod-wl driver from rpmfusion - I've removed and
reinstalled it
*If I remove the kmod-wl component, I can see akmod-wl detecting the
wireless card and building a new module during bootup
*I've searched all the logs using "bcm" as criteria, and see nothing -
nothing indicating it's loading drivers, nothing indicating it's not
*Network manager, when the wireless was working, showed two NICs,
calling them "eth0" and "eth1" - now, it's only showing the wired "eth0" NIC
*In /lib/firmware/b43-open directory I have
b0g0bsinitvals5.fw
b0g0initvals5.fw
ucode5.fw
Can anyone suggest where I might look for problems next?

Restricting ssh
by Timothy Murphy
I have an sshd server running on a machine in Ireland.
Can I configure it so that it only accepts connection
from certain machines, wherever they may be in the world?

Name that spin!
by Beartooth
I've been trying various things, mostly Fedora variants, for
various reasons lately, and haven't kept good track. One machine has been
running for days, maybe a week or more, on some live medium, calling me
"liveuser."
I like it, whatever it is; but I don't want to interrupt it (by
shutting down and ejecting the disk, for instance) till I've tried a few
more things. (Most of what I've done so far is more setting up than
using.)
"uname -a" says only that it's F14. I *think* it's Fusion. How do
I get it to tell me for sure?

Problems with grub/fedora/windowsxp
by Bill Case
Hi;
I don't seem to be able to chainload to WindowsXP anymore.
My grub.conf in /boot/grub/ includes:
...
title WindowsXP SP3

chainloader +1

Partition table entries are not in disk order
First question: Just to double check. Is the chainloader for WindowsXP
written correctly? I have been know to repeatedly over look a
stupidity.
Second Question: What does "Partition table entries are not in disk
order" mean? I googled and got articles on the new 4096 disk sector
format. Never had a problem with that before.
Second question:
grub> find /boot/grub/stage1
find /boot/grub/stage1
Error 15: File not found
but,
grub> find /grub/stage1
find /grub/stage1
(hd1,0)
(hd2,0)
Yet, the /boot partition exists, and contains my /grub/grub.conf file.
Any changes I make in this file show up in the grub menu at boot up.
Has grub been changed to ignore the /boot?
Why is find telling me I have two disks with stage1. I have only one
(hd1,0), Could it by finding a stage1 file on my (hd0,4) - my linux
backup partition? How? It hasn't been added to fstab yet.
Then,
grub> root (hd1,0)
root (hd1,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
grub> setup (hd0)
setup (hd0)
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... no
Checking if "/grub/stage1" exists... yes
Checking if "/grub/stage2" exists... yes
Checking if "/grub/e2fs_stage1_5" exists... yes
Running "embed /grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd0)"... 26 sectors are embedded.
succeeded
Running "install /grub/stage1 d (hd0) (hd0)1+26 p
(hd1,0)/grub/stage2 /grub/grub.conf"... succeeded
Done.
However, as a double check I ran grub-install
# grub-install hd1
Installation finished. No error reported.
This is the contents of the device map /boot/grub/device.map.
Check if this is correct or not. If any of the lines is incorrect,
fix it and re-run the script `grub-install'.
# this device map was generated by anaconda
(hd0) /dev/sda
(hd1) /dev/sdb
Now here is where it gets really confusing:
When grub.conf in /boot/grub/ includes:
title Fedora (2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64)
root (hd1,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64 ro root=UUID=20... etc.
Fedora won't boot.
But when I change it to the following (hd2,0):
title Fedora (2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64)
root (hd2,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64 ro root=UUID=20
Fedora boots.
Finally, as a test to see if WindowsXP will boot on its own, without the
use of grub, using my WindowsXP Recovery Console, tried to restore the
MBR. WindowsXP would no longer boot.
Two outstanding other pieces of information. I thought sda (hd0) was
failing and removed the cables to save it. Reattaching the cables
seemed to fix everything. I can mount sda. No more spin up problems
are being recorded by 'Smart'.
I re-installed Fedora 14 but his should not have mucked up the windows
(sda) installation order as can some times happen.
That's it.
Any suggestions on what I should try next?

i386 or x86_64 tree?
by Robert Moskowitz
How do I tell which update tree for Fedora 14 a system uses?
I have maintained a repo tree for i386 locally for some time. I have
always had 'older' equipment.
Well I just picked up an HP dc5000 and I noticed after the install, that
the upload profile stated it was an 686 platform (Intel P4 3.2Ghz). I
see i686 rpms on the system and there are i686 rpms in both the i386 and
x86_64 update trees. So I need to know if I now need to pull down the
x86_64 tree and point this new box to it instead of the i386 updates....
I believe this would be the $basearch value I see in the yum .repo files...
