ssh by user amandabackup
by Matthew Saltzman
I'm trying to set up amanda using the amaddclient command. That
requires that user amandabackup be able to log into the client machine
using ssh keys.
I've generated the keys on the server machine, copied the public key to
the client machine in /var/lib/amanda/.ssh/authorized_keys
(/var/lib/amanda is amandabackup's home directory). I believe all file
protections are set correctly--they mirror the ones for a regular user.
But ssh fails to use the keys and prompts for a password.
ssh with keys by a normal user works fine. No error messages to be
found in /var/log/secure on the client or with ssh -v on the server.
Any suggestions as to what the difference is and how to fix this would
be welcome.
TIA.

Easy PPTP Setup?
by Oliver Ruebenacker
Hello,
I am looking for a way to set up PPTP on F14. I did it long time ago
on a different machine back in F6 and it has been working all the way
to F14. The tool there opens a dialog box. Unfortunately, I have no
access to that other machine right now.
The only information I have is the IP of the PPTP server, and my
account information consisting of username, domain and password. The
maintainer of the PPTP server says the rest will be provided
automatically by DHCP. I tried on SUSE with tools like pptpsetup and
pptp-command, but these tools are poorly documanted and to me entirely
incomprehensible. For example, they ask for CHAP secrets and routing,
which I have no idea about. So I installed Fedora 14, thinking that it
would be easier. But now I can't find the tool I was using on the
other machine.
What tools can you recommend? Thanks!
Take care
Oliver

Re: F14 Design Spin

I live in a country where a high-speed internet connection is rare. I
happen to have one, and burn DVDs for people who don't. I have no
experience with other than the desktop spins, but know that the desktop
live-cd misses some basic stuff - like OpenOffice. I don't know if that is
the case with the Design Spin, but someone is asking a design spin disk. I
would like to offer him the complete packadge, without needing to download
another gigabit of data - which I know from experience can take days here.
I'm assuming that OpenOffice et al aren't in the Live CD Design spin
either... Is this a correct assumption?

Printing slow
by Geoffrey Leach
This has been reported in Bugzilla as 661814.
Fedora 14, up-to-date. foomatic-4.0.5-1.fc14.i686. Output to HP
LaserJet 1300, with parallel to USB connector.
On Fedora 13, printing of a web page containing a JPEG file would take
a minute or so from hitting print to page on the printer. On Fedora 14
(from first install) it takes 15-20 minutes. Printing a single .jpg
with the lpr command yields similar results. Straight text prints
immediately, whether directly or via a2ps.
As the list is not flooded with complaints, I'm guessing that its a
configuration problem. Any suggestions as to what that might be?
Thanks.

fedora13 - mouse IBeam change
by bruce
Hi.
down vote favorite
hi.
sorry to have to ask such a basic question!! i've got fedora 13,
trying to figure out how to change the "I Beam" pointer.
earlier, i had a "thin" "I Beam" pointer in my gedit/term windows.
now, I have a "thicker/shadow" kind of "I Beam" pointer when i move
the mouse over the gedit/term windows.
obviously, i've made some change, but i can't figure out what I
changed, or where this attribute is set. i've checked google/irc, as
well as looked through the "system-preferences-appearance" with no
luck.. i saw the customize part of the gui, and could resize the
"arrow" but nothing for the "I-Beam".
in one of my older boxes, the "thin" I Beam pointer is working, so
it's something I've done...
this isn't critical, but it is anoying!!
any thoughts/pointers would be helpful.
thanks

OpenOffice crashes compiz on F 14
by Kirk Lowery
The subject line pretty well summarizes it. I've got a vanilla Fedora 14
box, with the default theme and compiz enabled. Compiz works fine until I
try to do *anything* with Oo.o. Then it crashes.
I've googled around and apparently Oo.o has had issues with gnome gtk and
compiz, but I was unable to come up with a workaround except to disable
compiz.
Suggestions?
TIA!
Kirk
