Obsolete RPMs
by Dave Cross
I've upgraded a couple of systems from F14 to F15 using preupgrade.
Everything seems to have gone fine.
I'm slowly getting used to GNOME 3 and I'm sure that it will make
sense to me one day.
But it strikes me that there will now be a number of obsolete RPMs
hanging around on my system. These will be the RPMs relating to
features used in GNOME 2 but not in GNOME 3. I'm thinking of things
like compiz and all of the applets. Is there any reason why I
shouldn't just remove all of these RPMs? Are there any more that I can
remove safely?
Cheers,
Dave....

Garbled display and touchpad configuration
by cfunder108@gmail.com
Ok folks I know everyone is busy but it's time to actually sit down and write a driver for the ATI Radeon card used in a lot of laptops. This has been a topic/bug in the forums since 2008 without being resolved and the work-arounds aren't working. The garbled display is really getting to be overwhelming and the symantic touchpad is not functional and this is been going on since Fedore 13 and Ubuntu 10. It seem Linux is turning into an Intel/Dell shop. I'm running on a Gateway netbook LT3101u CPU - AMD ATHLON 64 ATI Radeon graphic card.
+++ I am a simple user -- I'm not a developer or programmer by any means or form. So please Help us out.++++
I think I will have to figure out which modules are required for my laptop and remove the unused modules from being loaded at boot. Also when I'm using Firefox and hit a website with active content puff the desktop and display become garbled

It seam that the dependencies problem was due to the choosing the
additional repository "Fedora update" during the installation I
reinstalled F15 without doing that and went through OK the rest is still
a problem most important is the email, if can't be solved I need to go
back to F14.

Need Support For Hardware & Live Usb Issue + Bugs version 0.1
by Navdeep Singh Sidhu
I have Dell Xps 15 with config:-
8 Gb RAM
2nd generation i7 processor 2.2 GHz Boost 2.0 upto 3.30 GHz
Dual Graphics Card Intel HD 3000 & nvidia geforce GT 540M with Optimus
Techonology
720 GB hardisk
Motherboard Dell XPS system L502X
Intel centrino 6230 Network Card with BT 3.0
I have installed 2 linux distro on my External USB portable seagate 500 GB
hardisk fedora 15 & Ubuntu 11.04. i have installed these distro by using HP
pavilion dv 2762 tx with config:-
Core2duo 1.83Ghz
2Gb ram
nvidia geforce 9600m graphics card
Both these distro works with all other older laptops Like HP, Dell studio 1
yr old config , Compaq 5 yr old, but not on my Dell XPS 15.
To check my laptops hardware compatibility i used a Ubuntu 10.10 live Cd. it
works fine . i use this cd as a live media but when i tried same Ubuntu
10.10 on live usb it gives blank screen or error which i mentioned below.
To check that my iso file damaged or my download has been corrupted or not,
i tried different distros with different desktop enviornment like
Gnome,KDE,Xcfe & Lxde. i tried fedora 15, ubuntu 10.10, ubuntu 10.04, ubuntu
11.04. slackware, eduboss each with avail flavors.
But all i have tried gives almost same error with each distro. i don't know
what is this some kind of bug or lack of support with dell chipset
(hardware). if live cd boots well then i think there is nohardware
compatibility issue with linux. I think this is lack of usb support because
may be Linux has no support until now for latest motherboards or hardware
architects.
These are the errors i got with different distros. i am not able to figure
out what's going on bcz i'm rookie in Linux programming. But if anyone can
do it, plz help me i haven't run my linux from previous 1 and half month and
i'm a linux addicted.

EDUBOSS (Debian derivative) (I apologize but i have write the full error i
got bcz may be it helps somebody to find what's going on)
BOOT FAILED !
The debian live image failed to boot. Please file a bug against the
'live-initramfs' package or email the debian Live mailing list at <
debian-live(a)lists.debian.org> make sure to note the exact version, name and
distribution of the image you were attempt to boot.
The file /live.log contains same debugging information but booting with
debug command line parameter will greatly increase it's verbosity which is
extremely useful when diagnosing issues.
live-initramfs will start a shell.
The error message was: Unable to find a medium containing a live file
system.

F15 - Shotwell no longer supports tabbed paper?
by Brian C. Huffman
All,
In F14, I was able to make beautiful printouts of my photos on my HP
Photosmart printer. Now I'm unable to find the option to select the 4x6
photo paper with tabs.
Am I missing something?
Thanks,

Can't control text size in Gnome-3
by Jonathan Ryshpan
I have just upgraded from Fedora-13 to Fedora-15, and now font size for
many of the functions in Gnome-3 can't be controlled, in particular the
size of the pull-down menus and some of the window text in Evolution.
The "Text Size"
(Little Man)->Universal Access Settings->Seeing->Text size
box is completely non-functional, as is the Text scaling factor slider
in
(gnome-tweak-tool)->Fonts
The font control functions for the various fonts in the same box seem to
control come fonts, in particular the fonts in gnome-terminal, but not
others, in particular not Evolution.
What's particularly puzzling is that the Text size choices in Universal
Access Settings did work for a while, but then stopped -- while they
were working they were linked to the slider on gnome-tweak-settings.
The fonts that are now used, probably the defaults, are painfully small.
Any Ideas?
Thanks - jon

Question about SMART
by Paolo Galtieri
I have 2 Seagate FreeAgent Go 1Tb drives. These are portable drives
that get their power through USB. Both these drives are about 1 year
old. Every time I login I get a notification that both these drives may
be going bad. The reason is too many bad sectors. One drive is
formatted as it originally came, i.e NTFS the other was reformatted as
Ext4. I have checked both drives using Seagate's tools (in non
destructive mode) as well as checking the NTFS one in Windows 7. No
problems where reported. The question is should I really believe what
SMART is telling me or is it just stupid :-)
There are no disk errors reported or any other issues that might
indicate the drive is going bad.
Any thoughts/comments are appreciated.

thunderbird (and firefox) stable
by Genes MailLists
I remember some earlier discussion on this but not the outcome forgive
me if a clear decision was made.
The current dev model for TB (similarly for firefox) is 4 versions
where each version is distinguished by the leading number in the version
string.
As new versions are released to stable (from beta) the leading number
bumps - so tracking stable requires following the stable branch which at
the moment for TB is 5.0 (beta being 6.x, earlybird being 7.x and
bleeding edge being 8.x)
F15 still has 3.1 - is there some reason F15 should not follow the
stable releases of upstream?
Thanks

Customized ibus/anthy shortcuts no longer work
by Stuart McGraw
My Ibus/Anthy IME (on Fedora 15) no longer honors the
keyboard shortcut changes I made.
A couple weeks ago I installed F15 and Ibus/Anthy and
changed the keyboard shortcut to enable/disable the
IME from Ctrl-Space to Alt-Space. It worked fine
until a few days ago when I noticed it's reverted
to Ctrl-Space. However Ibus Preferences still shows
Alt-Space. Resetting the shortcut has no effect.
I disabled Ibus with the Gnome IME applet, deleted
.cache/ibus, .config/ibus, .gconf/desktop/ibus, .anthy
and then (after logging in again) re-added ibus.
(Curiously, the enable/disable shortcuts are empty,
not reset to the defaults, so I think I missed deleting
some config file somewhere)
There were some updates to ibus possibly around the
time my customized keyboard shortcuts stopped working.
(Packages on my system are up-to-date except for
'kernel*')
Anyone have an idea how I can fix this and get my
preferred shortcuts to work again?? It is a fairly
major problem for me right now.
