creating .rpm files for special installations
by g
greetings.
on firefox tsl, a user of ubuntu needs to run a lan system wide installation
of an extension to firefox.
a reply was to create a .deb package and put in a local repository, add
local repo to all clients repo list.
to add an extension to firefox, appending to some config files is required.
not recalling all abilities of rpm, my question is, can rpm/yum append to
existing files?
tia.

The installation instructions stated to install Windows 2000 or better.
So I installed Linux.

network config
by Thomas Schweikle
Hi!
After consulting the handbook and various further internet sites I
am a bit lost:
starting up my fedora system it only activates network interface lo.
no other network interface is brought up until I login and start it
with "ifup eth0".
Quite bad, if you expect to reach the system via ssh. Any idea how
I'll get that interface up together with the machine, without having
a user login and activate it?
I have
/etc/sysconfig/network:
NETWORKING=yes
HOSTNAME=tola.fritz.box
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0:
DEVICE="eth0"
BOOTPROTO="dhcp"
ONBOOT=yes
NM_CONTROLLED="no"
TYPE=Ethernet
Rebooting doesn't enable eth0, only lo.

PDF files that are not simple links?
by Tom Horsley
Does anyone know what the deal is these days with lots of
web sites and PDF files? (I just encountered one on my online
pharmacy for instance, and back at the beginning of the
year when trying to access my W2 forms online).
I have no problem with a simple link to a real PDF file, but
now sites are doing some kind of magic voo-doo that (on
Windows, where it works) pops up the PDF in a new window
which has some sort of magic toolbar that appears when you
mouse over it.
I have no idea what kind of thing is being used to display
this, or why so many web sites think it is a good idea
to prevent their customers from accessing the site on
linux. All I get on linux is an about:blank new window
where nothing appears.
Anyone know if this nonsense has a name I can search
for or better yet, a firefox plugin that will enable me
to just access the damn PDF file?

I exported an xp appliance from vb to .ova. Then I did
qemu-img convert xp.ova -O qcow2 xp-disk1.img
no complaints.
But trying to boot it in qemu/kvm, I get 'not a bootable disk'.
Any ideas?

systemd: call script BEFORE shutdown
by Reindl Harald
what is the best way to place a shellscript which is called as
soon as possible before shutdown/reboot happens?
in my case for VMware-Workstation to suspend possibly in the
background running virtual machines since systemd vreaks
the logic of the the /etc/init.d/vmware
important is that the system must wait until this script
is really finished what can take some minutes

I have a deskjet F440 that works perfectly in fedora 14. But in 15 the

Overwriting a 4096 byte sector harddisk drive with random data
by yudi v
Hi
I need to write random data to a partition before encrypting it. Suggested
way is to use urandom:
#dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sda2
What is the use of operand "bs" in the following case? I see the above
command executed as follows sometime:
#dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sda2 bs=1M
For the hard drive I got, should I use the following command:
#dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sda2 bs=4096
>From what I understand, the first command above will write data in 512 byte
blocks, the second one in 1MB blocks, and the third in 4096 byte blocks.
Right?
I am a bit confused about the usage of this operand in this case.

Kind regards,

Bonjour,
Once upon a time, I could choose my window manager and language from the
gdm greeter. I recently installed F14 and this possibility is no longer
there: did I miss to install some package? And which one?
Thanks.
