-Saw an update for my motherboard[1]. Cool!
-Downloaded the update and applied it.
-System wouldn't boot. Cannot find a boot drive. Hard drive
is detected... but won't boot?
-Downgrade to old UEFI, play with settings. Still won't boot.
-Google.
-Find http://www.rodsbooks.com/efi-bootloaders/installation.html
Section "Announcing the Boot Loader to the EFI"
-Boot into rescue mode on my F17 USB installer.
-Type: efibootmgr -c
-Reboot. System boots now.
So, beware: BIOS updates are no longer an easy operation. There is a
default location for the EFI loader that Fedora is not using (but is for
USB/CD). Why is Fedora not using the default location? To play nice with
other OSes?

start openvpn client on boot fedora 17 64bit

I have an account with strong vpn im trying to get openvpn to start on
boot in fedora 17 but it is not playing nice at all people say set it up
in network manager but with strongvpn you login via a cert thats
included inside your config file. how can i start it as a service i
followed the steps in the wikki with no luck. can i make /etc/rc.local
executable then place the command in there?

I am quite sure that that's the first thing I did. Noted as the first
item. I then nuked every executable I could find. So if I failed to
'Apply' the setting, where is the executable which kdeinit *then* started.

Thanks. What a stupidly obtuse system for wasting cycles. I didn't even
know that there was another complete level of 'service' management. Now
it is turned off, it still does not answer the question:
Where is the damn executable which the service starts.
This sort of layered obscurity pisses me off. And the user cannot nuke
the libs, since they are "dependencies" of all sorts of other actually
useful bits of the install.

linux-wlan-ng module

I have an ancient Intel Pro/Wireless WUD2011BWW USB device
which works fine under Windows XP,
and which I'd like to get working under Fedora.
As far as I can see, this requires the linux-wlan-ng module,
which doesn't appear to be included with the kernel any more.
If anyone has any suggestions how to install this
(or any other way to get this device working under Linux)

mounting one usb interface (from 2 identified)

I have been wiping hard disks from systems that are no longer in use.
One disk, which had been part of a booting striped raid, would not
even allow me to dd to it, or so I thought, because I couldn't even
read the partition table. I marked the disk as borked and moved on.
Then the Windows OS on the machine I was using to wipe disks became so
corrupted that I could only boot it into a live CD, which was good
enough, but I still wanted access to those old Windows files and
didn't want to continue using a live CD as my only way of accessing
the machine.
Since the machine would never be used for web-surfing (for which
purpose I use another Linux distribution that I will never mention
again on this list), I installed Fedora on the borked disk just to see
what would happen. Before attempting the install, I deliberately
overwrote the MBR. The Fedora install went through just fine, but
then the system wouldn't boot, not even putting LILO on the drive with
an intact MBR.
Long story short, with LILO on the original Windows drive, if I ever
turn the power off, I have to "reinstall" Fedora, which merely
reinstalls LILO, and everything goes through just fine, including the
reboot. That is to say, Anaconda can find the new drive, install to
it, and correctly set some volatile boot pointer to the new drive that
gets lost if I ever turn off the power.
It's merely a nuisance, and I *really* don't want to try to fix the
MBR on the second drive any more than I already have (using MSI-SYS).
Any suggestions? Why can't Anaconda permanently tell LILO where the
second drive is? Presumably because the bios gets there ahead of LILO
and screws everything up after I have powered down, but that's only a
guess.

Need help with building rpms

Hi,
I am trying to build my own rpm for mutt. I am using the spec file from
the Fedora srpm. During the build it fails on the following command.

This is the error message I get.
chgrp: changing group of `$BUILDROOT/usr/bin/mutt_dotlock': Operation not permitted
Can't fix mutt_dotlock's permissions!
make[4]: *** [install-exec-hook] Error 1
I then realised only root can call chgrp, so I tried to build with mock.
But I still get the same failure. I have successfully used mock to
build notmuch and git before. What am I doing wrong this time?

why does this rsync commands copy again the same files?

Greetings,
I am running Fedora 16 x86_64. When I connect an external USB drive
and rsync to it my pictures with this command:
rsync -rvt --delete --no-o --no-g /home/z/photo/ /media/Verbatim/photo
because I don't care about ownership and permissions, I just want to
have the same files,with the same names and modification times, in the
same hierarchy of folders.
However, rsync keeps copying certain folders and pictures, and always
the same ones, every time, even if they are not changed at all. If I
rsync, unmount and unplug the drive, then plug it in again and re-run
the command above, rsync copies again hundreds of pictures to the
drive. What am I missing here?
FIY, the source folder is ext4, the destination vfat (see their mount
entries below)

sdctl and STANDBY

I have been trying to prevent my 2 external seagate drives from
spinning down into STANDBY mode.
When I use
sdctl -c STANDBY /dev/sdb
I get
/dev/sdb: ATA ST3500341AS CC1H
Change mode page: failed fetching page: Power condition
I get the same error for my smaller 500GB ST3500641AS.
So, now that sdctl cannot disable standby mode in these
drives, how safe is it to resort to using hdparm, the man page
of which is full of warning with regards to disabling the standby mode.
To wit:
-s Enable/disable the power-on in standby feature, if
supported by the drive. VERY DANGEROUS. Do not use unless you are
absolutely certain that both the system BIOS (or firmware) and the
operating system kernel (Linux >= 2.6.22) support probing for drives
that use this feature. When enabled, the drive is powered-up in the
standby mode to allow the controller to sequence the spin-up of
devices, reducing the instantaneous current draw burden when many
drives share a power supply. Primarily for use in large RAID setups.
This feature is usually disabled and the drive is powered-up in the
active mode (see -C above). Note that a drive may also allow enabling
this feature by a jumper. Some SATA drives support the control of this
feature by pin 11 of the SATA power connector. In these cases, this
command may be unsupported or may have no effect.
Would like some input from those who have actually used hdparm to
disable the standby mode.
