usb/camera
by Patrick Dupre
Hello,
When I plug my camera on the usb port it is recognized on bus 006
but the device is incremented every time. Hence, every time I need to
make a chmod a+w /dev/bus/usb/006/0xx to let a user read the pictures.
How can I fix this more elegantly?
Thank.

Can't kill hung remote CP copy
by Andrew Gray
Hi
Fedora 16 x86_64 Kernel 3.3.1-3.fc16.x86_64 #1 SMP
I have cif mount over a VPN to a remote windows share which I have a
local
"cp -fLruv" to.
If this "cp -fLruv" hangs because a VPN problem broke the connection
temporarily. I can't kill the CP and the system won't restart due to the
CIF mount which it can't umount as it is busy with the hung cp
operation !
I have you manually hit reset to get it back!!
How can I kill the broken cp operation ?
I have tried rsync but it takes too long

F16, XFCE/LXDE and hibernate button
by Joel Rees
Anybody using XFCE or LXDE who are missing their hibernate button in
the logout dialog after the recent kernel upgrade?
Or should I suspect that moving the /home partition to a new partition
yesterday is to blame?
(Need to look up what I have to do with SELinux after a move like
this. I remember there's something that needs to be done, don't
remember exactly what.)

Loss of accelerated video with fc15 and Radeon HD5700
by Alex
Hi,
I have an fc15 x86_64 desktop, and after doing a recent update and
restarting the computer, video refresh is very slow. Playing AVI files
and youtube videos (although jerky), seems to be okay. It's only
window refreshes, such as when I move a window from one place to
another or scrolling in gedit, for example. How can I troubleshoot
this?
I have a dual monitor set up with both monitors set to 1680x1050.
I've included my Xorg.0.log file and xorg.conf in hopes someone could
help. As I mentioned, it was only after a reboot. The system otherwise
previously worked just fine. I just haven't modified any of the
configuration options in so long, I don't know where to start.
Thanks,
Alex

flash updated (11.2 r202) yesterday, strange permissions stuff, no youtube
by Joel Rees
Per the subject, updated the local copies of flash yesterday (Friday the
thirteenth here). No time to check the results yesterday, and today, when
my daughter tried to listen to youtube, no joy.
So, i checked my shell history yesterday, and I'm pretty sure I skipped the
chown step.
Checking the permissions/owner flags, however, reveals something very odd.
Group was set according to the user. Owner was set to a numerical value
5000+owner.
Putting real numbers on this, given the user user519, numerical
userid:groupid 519:519,
the owner:group for /home/user519/.mozilla/plugin/libflashplayer.so was
5519:519 when I checked this morning.
Now, I did not erase the previous version of libflashplayer, so the usual
rules for cp without -p or a similar option (as I recall, and I don't see
the specifics in the man entry right now) would be to leave the existing
owner:group when overwriting. So I should not be surprised had the
owner:group been 519:519 in the example above. Needless to say, I don't
know of anything but a bug that would give me owner+5000.
(Unless I dozed off while my fingers were still typing, as I sometimes do
these days. Hate it when I do that. Gotta get more sleep. But I still can't
imagine what I might have done, sleep-typing, to end up with that, and I
don't see any record of such a thing in my .history file.)
And, having chown-ed to (per the example above) user519, flash still
refuses to run youtube for us.
Anyone else having issues with this version of flash? -- Shockwave Flash
11.2 r202.
And anyone have an idea why the owner of a file would end up 5000+userid?

off topic: combined output of concurrent processes
by Amadeus W.M.
This is not Fedora specific, so apologies for posting it here. I used to
post this kind of questions in comp.linux.misc or the like but I don't
have access to usenet groups anymore.
So here is the question. Suppose I have several processes that run
concurrently and each outputs stuff to stdout. Can the combined output be
intermingled?
Example: script ioTest.sh:
#!/bin/bash
i=0
while [ $i -lt 100 ];
do
echo "AAAAA" & # e.g. 500 As
echo "BBBBB" &
echo "CCCCC" &
i=$(($i+1))
done
Then
./ioTest.sh > out
The A's and B's and C's always seem to be in contiguous blocks of 500 in
the output file, but is that guaranteed?
Thanks!

Icedtea / OpenJDK running a Java Web Start (.jnlp) app
by Fernando Cassia
This is unbelievable. I'm outraged. I've been going in circles trying
to find what executable I need to point my browser to since I click on
a Java Web Start app launching link (on a properly configured Firefox
with OpenJDK java and Icedtea plug-in working, and the bwoser offers
me to open the .jnlp file with "gedit". ;-P
Google searches do not bring any information.
On Windows java there's a javaws.exe as part of the JRE and that takes
care of that (and needless to say Java JRE install automagically
associates JNLP links to javaws.exe at the browser level (helper app).
So the end user just "installs java" and is done with it.
Now, I've argued before that OpenJDK should include IcedTea as part of
the same package, because, heck, it's Java. I remember I got pummeled
for suggesting so "Java is java, and the plug-in is the plug-in" was
the general concensus. Since I don't want to argue, at this point I'd
settle for the package name to have an alias like "openjdk-plugin"
becase, gee, not everyone in the world knows that the open source java
has a plugin with a totally unrelated name to the open source java
package name (OpenJDK).
The IcedTea web page is a joke. Done by developers, for developers,
but with ZERO information for the end user who might just happen to be
in need to find how to launch a JWS app with his browser.
So here I am, looking at a browser that tells me if I want to open a
.jnlp link with a text editor, instead of looking at the Java Web
Start app I want to launch. The Icedtea page provides no information
of use, and google searches have me going in circles.

Perhaps this exists already, and if not, it should...
by Fernando Cassia
I found myself on a command line window, wanting to open a PDF, and I
didnt remember the name of the pdf reader that now comes as a default
install for Fedora. Too many years of "just installing Acrobat" left
me with "./acroread whatever.pdf" engraved into my brain cells.
So.. I had to go to "add/remove programs" type "PDF" in the search
field, and then wait as the program showed the name of the app:
evince.
Now that's great. I now know its 'evince whatever.pdf'.
But that got me thinking. Shouldn't there be a "meta-command" like
"open filename.whatever" that just seeks the default file association
in gnome or whatever, and find the app name, and invoke the right app
without the end user having to memorize the exact app name associated
with any given file extension type?.
I'm not exceptionally bright, and my bright ideas more often than not
tend to be ideas implemented ages ago... so I guess that utilty might
exist already, no?

External eSATA drive not recognized on 2nd power up
by Patrick Lists
Hi,
I have an up-to-date F16 x86_64 box with 2 eSATA ports on the back
powered by a JMicron JMB362 chip. When I attach an external SATA drive
to the eSATA port and power up the drive it is recognized fine. But when
I power down that drive, wait 2 minutes, and power it up again the drive
is no longer recognized. Also there are no messages related to the 2nd
power up in /var/log/messages. All SATA controllers are set to AHCI in
the BIOS. No idea where to go from here. Anyone have any suggestions how
I can fix this?
Thanks and regards,
Patrick
