Well-hidden yum feature in fc17
by Bill Davidsen
I noted that my upgrade of fc17 was running very slowly this morning. I was
getting only about 65-68kB download, and things were pretty slow. Since this is
a regular thing, I checked a few things, and found out that the upgrade was
going over IPv6! It was slow because my connection with a 2nd ISP for IPv6 was
for testing, and is only 768kb right now.
It looks as if yum chooses IPv6 sources when available, over IPv4. Who knew?
Yes, I confirmed with wireshark, really was using v6 for everything but
rpmfusion updates.

[OT] Custom 'wrote' lines

Okay, I gotta ask. Where on earth do you get the customized lines like
this:

I've seen various and sundry others like this one, and I can't really
google it since I don't have a clue what to call that.

Upgrade vs Install: request for recommendations (trick questions, sort of)
by Max Pyziur
Greetings,
I'm going through the recent release cycles of both Fedora and CentOS in
upgrading machines.
I've had to do a fresh install on a machine where the available /boot
partition size of 200MB was not adequate. Consequently, I created a /boot
partition of 1GB and did a fresh install. (This was for moving from
F15->F16; I then successfully upgraded to F17.)
The issue for me was matching the installation to what I had previously.
My approach was to store a list of rpms (rpm -qa > F15RpmList.txt) and
then sdiff -s to a list of F16 Rpms.
Is there a more efficient procedure than this?
Much thanks.

Help needed for NFS behind a firewall on F17
by Jouk Jansen
Hi all,
I'm running a NFS-server on a F17 system. Normally I set it to use fixed
ports by inserting (as the system-config-nfs tool does) the following lines
in /etc/sysconf/nfs :
LOCKD_TCPPORT=4000
STAD_PORT=4002
RQUOTAD_PORT=4003
LOCKD_UDPPORT=4000
MOUNTD_PORT=4003
After restarting nfs I check the ports used with "rpcinfo -p"
It appears that only lockd is running on the specified port (4000), the
other not.
What am I not doing correct?
How do I get the other nfs-services use ports 4001-4003?

Yes before finding Gentoo, it was my go to distro. For a binary based
distro, it's at the top of my list.

Memory......
by EGO-II.1
Hello All,
I was just wondering if anyone knew of a program, or command that give
you a "scan" of your memory running on your system? Preferably, it
should also give you stats as to what KIND of memory you have, the
AMOUNT of memory, and the MAX capacity that your machine can hold. Any
advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

How to limit maximum number of TCP connections
by Jatin K
Dear All
I'm on FC 15 which is acting as a router for Cable Internet connection
for 145 PC on the LAN, which works fine... But there is one question in
my mind, How do I limit the maximum numbers of concurrent connections to
router. i.e. if I want to allow only 90 concurrent connection to the
router at the given time only 90 PCs can pass through the router or
connect to the Internet other PCs/users have to wait until the connected
PCs session is over.
is there any solution/tweak available ???

transaction error updating python-qpid
by Robert G. (Doc) Savage
Ran into a transaction error trying to update python-qpid to 0.16-1 on
my F17 laptop yesterday:
# yum -y update --skip-broken
Here are the qpid packages I have installed:
$ rpm -qa | grep qpid | sort
python-qpid-0.14-1.fc17.noarch
python-qpid-qmf-0.14-1.fc17.2.x86_64
qpid-cpp-client-0.14-1.fc17.2.x86_64
qpid-cpp-server-0.14-1.fc17.2.x86_64
qpid-qmf-0.14-1.fc17.2.x86_64
See the last line below for the transaction error. Anyone have any
suggestions how to work around this one?
