Yum default settings and the cache
by jmaclean
According to the docs from man yum...
"keepcache Either `1' or `0'. Determines whether or
not yum keeps the cache of headers and packages
after successful installation. Default is '1'
(keep files)"
A fresh install of f17 shows
grep cache /etc/yum.conf
cachedir=/var/cache/yum/$basearch/$releasever
keepcache=0
So which is correct?

gnome shell extensions
by Patrick Dupre
Hello,
I cannot view the "gnome shell extensions" (gnome-tweak-tool) with
fedora 16.
ls .local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/media\(a)sotecware.net/
extension.js metadata.json
ls
.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/system-monitor\(a)paradoxxx.zero.gmail.com/
extension.js metadata.json
I looked around but I do not see what could be wrong.
Thank.

gnome 3 extensions install fails silently
by Bryn M. Reeves
Attempting to install the "put windows" extension for gnome3:
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/39/put-windows/
I get the "Download and install 'Put Window' from extensions.gnome.org?"
dialog and OK it and the extension apparently fails to install
somewhere.
Couldn't find anything obvious (e.g. .xsession-errors) and I've managed
to install a couple of other extensions that are not currently
RPM-packaged in Fedora this way.
Any clues on how to debug this further?
Cheers,

possible gcc bug?
by Skunk Worx
Hi,
I have an EPEL 6, 64 bit system (SL6) and an fc17 64 bit system.
My shared library uses boost, code synthesis xsd cxx-tree, and xerces-c.
There may be a bug in gcc that prevents this shared library from being
dlclose()'ed properly :
http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-help/2011-05/msg00403.html
fc17:
host: Loading libchild.so...
child: Constructor
host: so = 0xc0a030
host: Unloading libchild.so...
host: Unloaded.
host: (nil)
child: Destructor
The following sub-thread implies that this started affecting some
distributions around gcc version 4.6.0 :
http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-help/2011-05/msg00432.html
However my EPEL 6 64 is gcc / Red Hat 4.4.6-3 and exhibits the same
behavior.
Do you think this is a "won't fix" or "not a bug"?

John

apper problem in f17
by E. Hakan Duran
Hi all,
I wonder if anybody else is having the problem I am experiencing for the last
few weeks. I use Fedora 17 with KDE, and there is an apper service that
monitors available updates regularly. For the last few weeks, apper downloads
and installs the updates but stalls at the end of this process with a message
reading "Waiting for other tasks" and the progress bar oscillating back and
forth. I have to reboot the system to make apper function properly again. Of
note, reboot/re-login icons appear appropriately in the system bar at this
stage.
Any pointers will be appreciated to fix this annoyance.
Thanks,
Hakan

Re: Proposal request for ideas on naming Fedora releases.

Please do not give instructions to the general population, that the
general population cannot follow. I am thus posting to the users@
list, where this original request was sent.
My only request is to avoid names that sound like themes from other
distros. Any scheme we choose needs to be different enough to stand
on its own.
For example, any "$adjective $noun" name is going to make people think
of Ubuntu, and any "$distro $name" is going to sound like Debian. The
previous "Fedora $release $is-a-noun" scheme was "our way" and IMHO we
should return to that.
Removing the code name completely seems to me like a step in the
suit-and-tie direction and I would hate to see our project go that
path.
