Camcorder support
by Mateusz Marzantowicz
What software should I use in Fedora 17 to be able to capture and/or
watch video from camcorder?
I have Canon Optura 60 camcorder connected with USB cable to my
computer. dmesg shows that camera is detected but I have no idea what
application should I use to capture the video.
Thanks for all advice,
Mateusz Marzantowicz

Kppp missing from KDE Spin F17
by Chuck Peters
Two days ago I did a reintall of a friends Fedora and now she is really mad
at me because kppp wasn't there. I found wvdial and got it working after
being frustrated by system-config-network, but she is demanding a gui
dialer. A google search found the package knetwork-kppp, but yum install
knetwork-kppp says no such package.
What happened to kppp in F17 KDE spin and what package does she need?
Thanks,
Chuck

HP-P1006 Laser Printer -
by Bob Goodwin
This is Fedora 17/64 XFCE. I have been trying to install a network
printer, HP-P1006 Laser Printer. No matter what I do when I get to
the end of the process and do a test page nothing prints, it just
shows Status: Stopped - Printer error.
It seemed to require "hplip.plugin." I've gone through the install
process several times, the last time with "setenforce=0" to no
avail. That via the Administration > Printer gui. I also tried CUPS
with similar results.
The HP-P1006 requires USB input and is connected via a D-Link
DP-301U USB Printer Server which is the interface between Ethernet
and USB and has worked without a problem for several years with a
Brother 5140 laser printer. I do not usually have any problem
setting up network printers but this one appears to be unique with
it's "hplip.plugin" requirement. I am not certain that my efforts to
install that have been successful. At any rate "hp-setup" never
"finds" the printer.
Is anyone familiar with this problem? Any suggestions appreciated.
Bob

F16 - Adding a second video card
by Jeffrey Ross
I have an older motherboard/processor (Intel DG965RY with a Pentium D)
the system has an integrated video adapter (82G965) and I'd like to add
a second video Card (PCI card ATI RAGE IIC) I'm not looking for fast
video but would like to use 2 monitors.
I put the ATI card in the machine and an lshw shows the card:
-display UNCLAIMED
description: VGA compatible controller
product: 3D Rage IIC 215IIC [Mach64 GT IIC]
vendor: ATI Technologies Inc
When I first booted the system with the card, the BIOS made the ATI card
the primary and once X started the system went blank, changed the bios
to force the integrated card to be primary and everything works as
before, however I don't know how to tell X that there is a second video
card and to start using it.
What's the magic command that I'm unable to find? From the GUI I've
checked displays under system settings but I only see my integrated
video interface, and "detect displays" produces nothing but the existing
display.
Thanks,
Jeff

Network Manager creates alias - F17
by Geoffrey Leach
Here's the reported configuration
NetworkManager Tool
State: connected (global)
- Device: p3p1 [System em1]
....
p3p1 is my ethernet device. That's correct. What I'm curious about is
where the 'System em1' comes from.
Thanks.

I thought I might say, having Fedora 17 installed, that when I watch
Youtube videos online, they are somewhat fuzzy. Is this common?

Nautilus can mount home dir shared over smb
by Pasha R
I have 2 F17 computers, one of them shares several dirs over smb. From
the second computer, I can access all shares except home dir with
nautilus - when I try, I get an error "nautilus could not display
smb://10.0.0.1/user". At the same time "smbclient //10.0.0.1/user"
works fine. Is it time for bugzilla, or there is something I missed?
Thanks.

Motherboards
by Gary Hodder
Hi all,
I am wondering what motherboards users are using on there Linux box?
I had a Asus m4a79t delux but in corroded under 2 years and failed.
Asus blames the customer oxidation and will not give warranty even
though it has 3 years warranty.
Strange how a old p5 Intel machine beside it is perfectly fine.
Asus warranty not worth the paper its written on.
Have a Asus crosshair V formula that spent more times being repaired
than been used.
It still comes up with eprom errors on boot and runs like a dog and Asus
will not give money back as they say they do not support Linux.
So we have proved that this brand is crap, what else is there?
Am looking at the Gigabyte ga-990fxa-d3, does this board play well with
Linux as looking at putting it in what was the m4a79t box.
Thanks
Gary.
