Ummmmmm......
There is no directory "/root/.pkcs11/". The permissions on directory
"/root/" are "dr-xr-x---". I added write permissions for user and
group, then I rebooted the system and turned on the printer. "lpstat -t" now gives:
=============== begin
bash.1[~]: lpstat -t
scheduler is running
no system default destination
device for Xerox_WorkCentre_6015NI: usb://Xerox/WorkCentre%206015NI?serial=BD1580153&interface=1
Xerox_WorkCentre_6015NI accepting requests since Wed 15 May 2013 12:22:30 PM EDT
printer Xerox_WorkCentre_6015NI is idle. enabled since Wed 15 May 2013 12:22:30 PM EDT
bash.2[~]:
=============== end
But there's still no directory "/root/.pkcs11/"!

I did this:
=============== begin
bash.2[~]: cat -n testprint.txt
1
2 A very short test text file for testing the printer.
3
bash.3[~]: lp testprint.txt -d Xerox_WorkCentre_6015NI
request id is Xerox_WorkCentre_6015NI-19 (1 file(s))
bash.4[~]:
=============== end
The tail -f generated a lot of output:
=============== begin
bash.1[~]: cd /var/log/cups/
bash.2[cups]: tail -f error_log

combining files and testing results
by Frank Murphy
Having looked at "man join" wasn't sure of it's use here.
Unknown number of files, constant is extension .list
(For testing purposes only using two)
cat *.list >> output.joined | sort -u
How can I test if the output.joined,
is indeed the combined two lists with dupes removed.

dar is missing from EPEL 6
by MegaBrutal
Hello,
I'm a CentOS user.
I see "dar" is not included in EPEL 6, while it is there in EPEL 5. I
suppose it's left out of EPEL 6 by mistake. Please anyone who has the
authority to do so, fix it!
I also can't find "dar" in other repositories. If I download it from
EPEL 5, I can't install it because of missing depedency
(libcrypto.so.6). Compiling dar from source is Hell. So I really need
an up-to-date "dar" package which is compatible with CentOS 6.4.

Can anyone recommend a cheap MP3 player?
by Anthony
I have an old iPod Touch 1st Gen that I really still use quite a bit
(mostly for email and the like). But since I moved all of my computers
to Linux, I can't access the device anymore and can't transfer music to
and from it. I'm not willing to install Windows in any form be it a VM
or the like, So I'm going to get a new MP3 player and just use the Touch
like a handheld for email and podcasts I can stream online.
Can anyone recommend a good, cheap 8gb MP3 player that will work with
Fedora? If possible, I'd like something that simply shows up as a flash
drive or something instead of having the need to install libraries and
other programs to access it.
Thanks!

Cannot save with ISO-8859-15 character encoding
by Paul Smith
Dear All,
I have used gedit for several times on the same document, but I am now
getting the following error while saving the file:
Could not save the file /home/psmith/psmith.htm using the Western
(ISO-8859-15) character encoding.
Is it possible to save the file with the ISO-8859-15 character encoding?
Thanks in advance,
Paul

Can't start in graphical mode or select desktop after software uninstall
by Anthony
So I wanted to remove libimobiledevices since I *though* I was the one
who'd installed it and it was no longer needed (I'm ditching the iPod).
I typed
sudo yum remove blahblah
where blahblah was the actual package name for libimobiledevices.
All of a sudden, I saw it removing all sorts of stuff I didn't want to:
blueman, banshee, empathy, etc. It then dropped me to a terminal screen
where it had started blueman again. It stayed there.
Finally, I restarted the computer and it only starts at runlevel 3
(non-graphical mode). I have to log in and type startx every time to
bring up the desktop. BUT, it only automatically starts GNOME3 and not
XFCE. I also have no way to select XFCE as I no longer get the login
screen in graphical mode. It just starts the desktop.
How can I fix this? Did I just do something that will require me to
reinstall my system?
Oh, I also tried to do
sudo yum install libimobiledevices and it told me that it was already
installed.
Help, please!

Re: [Yum] $rleassever $basearch from where?
by Frank Murphy
Apology for self reply.
Slight problem:
even though, have changed
/usr/lib/yum-plugins/my_local.py
to point to:
/var/cache/yum/$releasever/$basearch/my_local/packages
left repodir commented out in /etc/yum/pluginconf.d/my_local.conf
it saved some test updates to literally:
/var/cache/yum/$releasever/$basearch/_my_local/packages
it created (due to createrepo=enabled)
/etc/yum.repos.d/_my_local.repo
baseurl=file:/var/cache/yum/$releasever/$basearch/_my_local/packages
cat /var/log/messages shows nothing,
I did "> /var/log/messages" before test.
any debugging pointers.

Re: [Samba] Samba 4 Packages Available for Download
by Fernando Lozano
Hi there,
[Sorry for cross-posting, I hope I didn't violated any list policies]
> this is just a heads-up that SerNet does provide Samba 4 packages
> (including AD DC package) now.
It was told on the fedora user's list that the kerberos implementation
used by Fedora, RHEL and CentOS conflicts with the samba one, and so
Fedora was providing samba4 binaries without AD DC support. This was
related to the use of FreeIPA by Fedora and RHEL.
So I wasn't expecting to see packages with AD DC support for RHEL and
CentOS so soon. Thanks a lot!
But how did you manage the kerberos problem? I see you repo provides
only samba4 packages, and do not replace any other library or daemin
from CentOS and RHEL.
Or would the problem be present only on newer Fedora releases, and not
on RHEL6 (yet)? Would this be related to the fact servnet does not
provide samba4 packages for Fedora, or you simply don't package anything
for Fedora?
Another question: if my CentOS server is using samba3 from sernet repos,
may I upgrade them using sernet samba4? Or should I uninstall samba3 and
do a clean install of samba4, redoing all configuration manually?

No, I obviously wasn't complete in saying what I did:
I first made backup copy of my f16
and then did the preupgrade from that f16copy.

I uname -r
3.8.11-100.fc17.i686.PAE
this is the one and only kernel that the preupgrade provided.
I will look at /var/log/cups/error_log
