The OP is connecting using VNC. So he needs a desktop and at least part of X. Even if you are connecting using ssh instead of VNC, you will need the X libraries if you want to run X based programs and have them displayed on the local machine. If you are running xvnc as the X server on a headless machine, you don't need a video card.

Thanks for the info Mikkel. Haven't done any networking myself, though as I just got a second computer and router I am looking into it. I figure I'll start with samba (it already has XP and only a 30GB HD so I don't want to dual boot right away)then move on to ssh, nfs, vnc etc. etc.
