- Overview
The SHIM (Adaptec HostRAID re-compilable package ) code model allows the end user to recompile the code for Adaptec HostRAID without requiring access to Adaptec closed source RAID code. The proprietary code is supplied in a pre-compiled object module that can be linked to the recompiled source code to provide a fully functioning Linux device driver. This procedure can be used to recompile the SAS HostRAID driver (adp94xx) or the SATA2 drivers (aar81xx/adp3132). The SAS driver, adp94xx, supports the ASC-48300, ASC-44300 and ASC-58300 SAS controllers. The SATA2 driver, aar81xx, supports the AAR-1420SA and AAR-1430SA controllers and adp3132 supports AAR-1220SA Controller. Adaptec has tested this recompile procedure ONLY on the following Linux kernel streams: RedHat RHEL 3 RedHat RHEL 4 SUSE SLES9 SUSE SLES10 Fedora Core 4 Support for other Linux streams may be attempted by the user, but Adaptec does not provide any support for such applications. Linux device driver recompilation is something that should only be attempted by Linux experts. This procedure is not intended to be a step-by-step guide for the novice user. The user may need to modify these procedure to fit their specific application. In the instructions that follow, the following terms are used: - target system refers to the system on which the driver will be USED. - compile system refers to the system on which the COMPILE will occur. - target kernel refers to the kernel version which the recompile supports. Note that the recompile can be done on any suitable system. The compile system does not need to run the target kernel, nor does it need to have the target adapter (SAS or SATA2) installed. Obviously, the target system must have the required adapter (SAS or SATA2) and must support the target kernel.

- Known issues
Fedora Core 5 is not supported, because of the GPL License definition issue within the Fedora Core 5 kernel, driver compiled for Fedora Core 5 kernel will contain an undefined variable and thus is not able to initiate itself.
