True enough. In fact, there was a small warning telling me there were
available updates, so I clicked OK. After a while, there was an
'update done' or such, and I don't remember seeing a warning about
having to reboot for some changes to take effect. And yes, I never
shutdown the machine.

It tells you to reboot onloy if you upgrade a kernel in most situation.
