Wow! NOT a good fit for your use case. Like walking with a stone in your shoe. Life has too many irritations already, great to get rid of some of them.
Agree that if vlc isn't fit for OP's purpose, then find another player.
I would never hit these. It sounds like you could probably use an audio player like audacious instead, since you aren't bothering with the video.
If vlc is being launched from the command-line, one can try the "--novideo" option. There should be a similar option available via the menus.
