Everything else works great, but this does get pretty annoying. Any ideas?

One Idea, heat problem. Inspect the inside for dust and crud in heat sinks. Inspect and verify that all the fans are spinning.
My last 'annoying' problem was a hairball in the heat sink under a small fan. (my box was vintage Pentium II - 266; Matrox Millenium too).
In my case a small fan was mounted on top of a heat sink blowing down into the fingers of the heat sink. Over time dust built up under the fan where it was invisible on a quick inspection.
