The drive is permanently mounted, but only accessed at night with the
rsyncs. Or when I have to rescue an old version.
It is an old HP PC, USB2, and I am a little leery of using USB power.
Aye. One of my backup pairs is usually mounted, like yours.
I recently bought a 7 port USB3 powered hub just to accomodate multiple
external bus powered drives, for exactly the issues you're concerned
about. A huge win. So the hub is always plugged into the server on one
of the USB3 ports, and the drives come and go.
