Take a look at
http://libguestfs.org/ and the "guestfish" tool for
poking inside VM images. If you need to actually mount it,
"guestmount".
mkdir ~/guestmount
guestmount -a guest.img -i --ro ~/guestmount
should do it. (Remove --ro for read-write access, of course.)
