You're correct, the change indicates the problem is probably not hal.

I gave up, I would su to root and start k3b and it would not always
work. So I said fine, if you want root I'll log out and back in as
root, and that seems to work for k3b for me anyway. A bit of a pain but
I'm not going to argue with my OS, if it wants to be stinky fine :-)
