You can also ssh into the system, if you can, and edit the file...
~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/pointers.xml
find the appropriate line
<property name="Device_Enabled" type="int"
value="0"/>
and change the value to "1"
Thanks. That made it simple as switching to a different screen and
desktop allows the edit.
