Agreed on your final point. Just for grins, I'm downloading and will try the Radeon X300 drivers directly from ATI with Compiz enabled.

'Directly from ATI' you will have to compile them manually. I think it's better use rpm [1]. Just my 2 cents...

I found that out. The ATI drivers don't like the current kernel. I'm using rpmfusion (for the codecs), but I don't see any ATI drivers there.
