Of course you could boot to the previous kernel, remove the latest one, reboot again to
the previous
kernel and allow the upgrade to test.
Many thanks, I think it worked. The kernel upgrade this morning
installed cleanly.
This is probably a bug in the upgrade process, in that there is no check
or code to remove the journal on /boot that was put there by an earlier
fresh install.
