I also thought that grub2 wasn't supposed to require the install step
but when I tried it without it, it didn't work (not a panic this time
but some NFS mounting issues on boot, which threw me into rescue mode).
With grub2-install, it worked correctly.
That's why I wrote "shouldn't" instead of "doesn't."
There are always
exceptions and odd cases. And, AFAIK, using it can't hurt, even if it's
not needed.
