I just did a yum update, and KDE came down the pipe. The update however seemed to have hosed server icons on my system: including, but not limited to some icons in my KMenu.
My yum.log for the day is attached.

"some" icons? Can you be a little more specific?
-- Rex
Sure. Should have initially. ALl the category (for lack of a better word) in my KMenu and one icon in my quick launcher applet which let to home (had an icon of a house)
Please see snapshot here (Sorry, didn't have time to circle it, currently in a rush) http://www.pembo13.com/pub/snapshots/snapshot-kde-3.5.5-0.1.fc5.png
Thanks.

Hello, Arthur I don't know if you have the same problem that I have or not, but here goes: If I am not mistaken, your screenshot looks something like this: http://www.afolkey2.net/Projects/kmenu-1038am.jpg
Is this perhaps the way that it used to look, and the way that you would like it to look?: http://www.afolkey2.net/Projects/kmenu-1039am.jpg
I continue to have this problem because I run KDE compiled from the Branch 3.5 sources &installed in a non-default location (so as not to overwrite the FC RPMS) For me it goes something like this: 1. Install new version of Fedora Core. 2. Reboot, login. Discover that my KMenu has been trashed: http://www.afolkey2.net/Projects/kmenu-1038am.jpg 3. Run the following command as root: "rpm -e --nodeps redhat-menus" 4. A few seconds after the command finishes running, my KMenu is back to normal: http://www.afolkey2.net/Projects/kmenu-1039am.jpg
Unfortunately, some official Fedora Core updates depend on redhat-menus. So if I exclude that RPM in my yum.conf, I don't get those updates (I assume) So, what I have to do is run "rpm -e --nodeps redhat-menus" whenever "redhat-menus" is reinstalled during a "yum update"
Again, this might not be your problem, but based on how your KMenu looks, and the fact that it got hosed after an update at least makes our situations look similar.
Rex: a few weeks ago this problem seemed to be fixed. But then it just started happening to me again. I looked for the thread where you and I discussed this issue, but I could not find it. I have no idea when "redhat-menus" started going back to destroying my KMenu....
Have a Great Day, Steven P. Ulrick

That's exactly how my kmenu looks now and looked before. Pity I did not have a screenshot of before.

I found this solution somewhere and it worked for me:
cd ~/.config mv menus menus.orig kbuildsycoca
Hope this helps, Akemi

Thanks. Since Rex already responded, I'll wait for his follow up before I try your suggestion.

Akemi's suggestion is a good one, run kbuidsycoca from a konsole window (: You may or may not need to move ~/.config/menus out of the way.

Will do as soon as I get home.

This worked like a charm to fix my KMenu. The icon in the quick launcher is still missing, but I can't remember what was there before.
Thanks.

This did not work for me since I'd built mine with konstruct. However, running kbuildsycoa, while it spit out quite a few warnings, resulted in a nearly 2x increase in the number of items in the K-menu, making some things visible that had never been visible before.
Overall, a big thank you!
