The xorg Radeon driver doesn't currently support switching between LCD and
CRT displays. That's apparently a regression from XFree86, so we can hope
it will be fixed eventually.
There's a package called radeontool (see Dag's repo) that can control the
backlight and video-out power manually, but it's a bit of a hack.

I tried radeontool. Maybe I did something wrong, but it doesn't seem to
change anything. Looking at the options I'm not sure it would help
anyway.
I was on a previous version of xorg, not sure which, and everything was
fine. When I was on my laptop display it gave me a resolution of
1280x800 (i think) and when I had my external monitor hooked up I got
1280x1024 (definitely).
Since the xorg upgrade to 6.8.2 I'm honestly not sure what resolutions
are trying to be used. I think it's using 1024x768 on both.
