Is anyone packaging the new version of SpamAssassin for FC3? An awful lot of spam is beginning to get past spamassassin-3.0.4. Alternatively, how compatible with FC3 is the rpm built by doing
rpmbuild -tb Mail-SpamAssassin-3.1.0.tar.gz
on the tarball available from spamassassin.apache.org as per the instructions on the download page?
TIA.
Best, Darren

spamassassin-3.1.0-1.fc5 is in rawhide / development. Looking back to past I think there is a good chance that Warren prepares and update for FC3 and FC4. He seems to follow this list, so I guess he will state about this ;)

Do you know of a good place that has documentation on how to setup a milter (that may come with FC1) with spamassassin? I've looked; but, I thought FC1 had support for SpamAssassin out of the box for the mail servers; or is that just with ProcMail?
Thanks, James Kosin

As SpamAssassin itself does not come with a milter you need a helper. Fedora Extras has for the current releases (FC3 and FC4) the spamass-milter packaged. (Shouldn't be that hard to rpmbuild from src.rpm for legacy FC1.) A milter application I highly recommend is MimeDefang (www.mimedefang.org). It can do a lot more than just hook in SA, just by few adjustments in the filter file using Perl code. The mailinglist and the MD Wiki has a lot of very useful information. MimeDefang does its own SpamAssassin calls and uses strategies to avoid the known downsides of SA being a resource hog. Using the LDA Procmail isn't that much recommended on more busy mail servers and it is less efficient (at least be sure that if using Procmail to make use of spamc / spamd and not calling spamassassin directly). Sorry, I have no real documentation hint for you. Pages you might look over are:

I do exactly that for FC2. I now have 3.1.0 running on 3 FC2 servers with no special tweaks. Save your old configuration, in case there's some incompatible config change that you need to migrate. These are rare, though, and the RPM will install a local.cf.rpmnew if you changed anything in the stock one. (The new one is all comments about things you might install. No actual content.)
I run SA and ClamAV via the MIMEDefang milter, and then run a second pass from procmail using spamc/spamd, but I have relatively low mail volume so the double-hit is acceptable. Otherwise I'd change the MIMEDefang setup to modify the message instead of just checking it for score. Instead, messages that are accepted (under 10) are processed a second time for markup and then filtered by Procmail into a separate spam folder.

There are always current rpms for spamassassin for Fedora Core and Red Hat (Enterprise) Linux as far back as RHL 7.3 at
http://atrpms.net/name/spamassassin/
It's also worth while to use it on FC4, as it has additional SPF/DK/whatever support.

You could also download the rawhide SRPM for spamassassin and rebuild it for FC4
rpmbuild --rebuild --clean spamassassin-3.1.0-1.fc5.src.rpm
You also need perl-Mail-SPF-Query from extras
