Hello list,
I've tried to install JRE in order to use eclipse later on, but if I run
rpm -i --test ... I've got a segmentation fault :-(
The installation of JSDK with rpm failed, because ... #########################cut here################## error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory. #########################cut here##################
Well, so I only need to install libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3, and I found it as compat-libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3 on the ftp server:
ftp://ftp.join.uni-muenster.de/pub/linux/distributions/fedora/linux/core/2/i386/os/Fedora/RPMS/
But again: rpm -i --test ... -> segmentation fault?
Are there any ideas, perhaps that it is forbidden to use JAVA on fedora?
Regards
Alexander

What does the output from the 'segmentation fault' look like?
It seems you are on FC2? From the repo URL?
Are there any ideas, perhaps that it is forbidden to use JAVA on fedora?
It definitely can install, this FC4 box has it
# rpm -q jre jre-1.5.0_04-fcs

Sorry, but there is nor core file, and there si also no output :-(

You are right, but I don't want to update to FC4 now, because this take to much time.

# rpm -q jre jre-1.5.0_04-fcs
Is there really no solution for FC2 available?

Java worked on FC2 too IIRC.
Try
strace rpm -i --test ...
to see if you can get a clue.
There is quite a lot, but I don't understand the messages here. It ends up with:
##################################cut here#################### mmap2(NULL, 1130496, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0xb7948000 rt_sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, ~[RTMIN], [], 8) = 0 rt_sigprocmask(SIG_SETMASK, [], NULL, 8) = 0 brk(0) = 0x9ab5000 brk(0x9adc000) = 0x9adc000 --- SIGSEGV (Segmentation fault) @ 0 (0) --- +++ killed by SIGSEGV +++ ##################################cut here####################
If you need more informations here, please let me know it, and I'll try to send you the informations.
Check in
/var/log/messages
for segfault info maybe?
There is not a single message written out :-(
Running rpm in verbose mode (-vv) yields:
##########################################cut here##################### rpm -vv -i --test compat-libstdc++-7.3-2.96.118.i386.rpm D: ============== compat-libstdc++-7.3-2.96.118.i386.rpm D: Expected size: 1054177 = lead(96)+sigs(344)+pad(0)+data(1053737) D: Actual size: 1054177 D: opening db environment /var/lib/rpm/Packages joinenv D: opening db index /var/lib/rpm/Packages rdonly mode=0x0 D: locked db index /var/lib/rpm/Packages D: opening db index /var/lib/rpm/Pubkeys rdonly mode=0x0 D: read h# 515 Header sanity check: OK D: ========== DSA pubkey id 219180cddb42a60e D: compat-libstdc++-7.3-2.96.118.i386.rpm: V3 DSA signature: OK, key ID db42a60e D: added binary package [0] D: found 0 source and 1 binary packages D: ========== +++ compat-libstdc++-7.3-2.96.118 i386/linux 0x1 D: opening db index /var/lib/rpm/Depends create mode=0x0 D: opening db index /var/lib/rpm/Basenames rdonly mode=0x0 Segmentation fault ##########################################cut here#####################
So, this is a little bit more, but I assume not enough...

I don't understand the strace mmap() stuff either.
However, the opening db index stuff reminds me, try
rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__*
and then try again with your rpm transaction.

I don't have any datasets starting with "__" in /var/lib/rpm.
ls -la /var/lib/rpm gives:

Tank's for the answer, but that is not my problem. I want to install as root, and the rpm package is located in /tmp. But perhaps rpm want to install the package into a directory that doesn't exist. However, in such a case I would expect an error message instead of a segmentation fault without a core dump and without any message written to the console or /var/log/messages.
