Sorry... forgot to answer that one. I was instructed by the ISP to power-down the cable modem for one hour and did so. The problem still exists only with the Linux system, but not with the Windoze system.
Linux (Fedora) can not ping the gateway or any other IP on the outside world; it can ping the NIC IP assigned by the ISP.
ifconfig eth0 does not have the leased IP (24.159.201.xxx) in its output lines, only what I have shown below.

- An earlier suggestion was to power off then back on the modem. Have
you done that?
- What is the output of 'ifconfig eth0' ? Does it match the
24.159.201.xxx above?
- Can you ping the eth0 address?
I have at times had to power off then back on the modem, followed by 'service network restart' when my cable ISP went braindead. That sequence usually works.

if ifconfig eth0 does not show you the 24.159.201.xxx this is your problem. What address does it show? Are you using DHCP to get the address?
