usb storage and FC2

Hi everybody,

i think it was already asked but i couldn't find something by searching
archives, so here it goes...

I recently upgraded to FC2, and i can't use usb memory sticks. Nothing
happens when i plug the stick in. No usb-storage module loaded,
/var/log/messages says:


Jun  3 16:48:23 brunettie kernel: usb 3-2: new full speed USB device
using address 2
Jun  3 16:48:28 brunettie kernel: usb 3-2: control timeout on ep0out
Jun  3 16:48:28 brunettie kernel: uhci_hcd 0000:00:1d.2: Unlink after
no-IRQ?  Different ACPI or APIC settings may help.

I really don't get it. What should i do? Actually it looks like
usb-storage wasn't even compiled as a module...but it looks too strange
to me.

Have you tried mounting the device?

mount -t auto /dev/sda1 /mnt

Have you also tried mounting using the device /dev/sda. Give 
either of those a shot, it apparently sees the device since 
your log says "new device added" so on and so forth. Also, try 
plugging the usb device in and then:

cat /etc/fstab

Does it reveal that a mountpoint was created for the device 
and an entry in fstab thusly written?

No way. I can't mount something without, at least, having kernel mode
usb-storage properly insmod'ed. And what i was saying a few lines up, is
that apparently usb-storage is missing from my machine - though i
upgraded from FC1 to FC2 by iso images.

It says so, but it doesn't load usb-storage into kernel and then it
gives up since it can't find an IRQ for the new device.

Absolutely nothing happens.

Somebody told me that this thing of memeory stick not being mounted was
something known to happen with FC2. Maybe they were wrong. 

My point now is: i don't have usb-storage on my system - is this normal
for a normal FC2 upgrade? How can i do to fix it? Brand new kernel or
just compiling some new modules? As to both chances, a bit of help is
needed. I never compiled a 2.6.

What does

     locate usb-storage

or (as root)

     modprobe usb-storage

Say?

AFAIK there was a bug with usb storage in 2.6.5. An upgrade of your
kernel might help.

I guess you may be right. usb-storage is indeed present, but not loaded
automatically. I can insert module usb-storage, and it gets properly (i
presume) 'linked' to scsi_mod. However, if i try to mount /dev/sda1, i
still get errors: it says it is not a valid block device (which is fals,
it works perfectly on FC1 and other linux systems).

That is exactly what i am running. So, i should compile a new kernel?
Mmmmm...this is not really on the idea of a desktop distro, isn't it?
But i wonder if i am the only one experiencing such a problem. I mean,
memory sticks are quite normal, aren't they? Are you all using kernel
2.6.5.1-358 wihtout problems?

Do you know that your device _is_ sda1? If it's connected try (as root)

    fdisk -l

and see if there is something that looks like your USD-Device...

Don't know if there is an updated kernel availible via yum/apt. But for
testing there is nothing wrong with taking a vanilla kernel from
kernel.org.

Yep, USB-Memorysticks a quit normal, but with a kernel bug even
something normal can be a pain in the ...

Yes, my device *must* be /dev/sda1. Anyhow, both hwbrowser and fdisk -l
say nothing about any sd?? device. Simply, to my system memory stick are
like ghosts. ;)

I know. Still i wonder if it was a good choice to release FC2 with a
kernel that has such an annoying bug to normal desktop users (for a
server, i probably couldn't care less...).

I can access my MP3 player (Pontis SP600) and digital camera 
(Olympus C8080) through USB-storage on stock 2.6.5-1.358 kernel 
without any problems.

Sorry, "without any problems" proved to be premature. Trying to 
copy a full directory (about 50MB) from the MP3 player locked up 
as in bug #124763. Copying individual files worked OK.

winmodem & serial-driver

Hello,

can anybody help me?

[I was using FC1 and I could use my
 internal modem inside the IBM R40e-TP with
 the 2.9.5-SmartLink-driver [2.9.5] -> no problem(!).]

After I installed the new system (FC2) on my R40e
some problems has appeared:
The new modem-driver (2.9.7 for 2.6-kernel) could be installed, but
everytime one tries to load the driver the following output is created:

This was strange to me since no problems came up while installing the
driver. So I looked for debug-messages from my module (slamr):

that different driver module (serial)
which is holding my modem resources.
May you can help me with the configuration in order to get my modem
working.../lib/module/2.6.5-.../build/driver/serial/...

How can I fix this problem? Any hints?
How can stop serial grapping my modem?
