YUM problems.

Hi All,

I'm having issue with yum on several machines in different locations.
One of them (the most pressing one) is a brand new build and when
attempting to use yum I receive the following error:

[root@u15271166 etc]# yum list available
Setting up repositories
Could not retrieve mirrorlist
http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?repo=core-6&arch=x86_64
error was
[Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (110, 'Connection timed out')>
Error: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: core

My yum.conf looks like this...

[root@u15271166 log]# cat /etc/yum.conf
[main]
cachedir=/var/cache/yum
debuglevel=2
logfile=/var/log/yum.log
pkgpolicy=newest
distroverpkg=redhat-release

Is there any chance you are going through a proxy server?
I have the environment variables:
ftp_proxy
http_proxy
FTP_PROXY
HTTP_PROXY 
set to our proxy server.  I suspect yum does not use them
all, but I have not tryied to narrow it down. Also, the
yum.conf file allows you to specify a proxy server there too.

The server is a root server with 1and1.com and I should not have to go
via a proxy...

Have you tried reverting back to the default values in your .repo files? E.g.

I reverted back to the original stuff and clean my yum cache and such
up.  I'm now receiving URL timeouts on the mirrors.  Does anyone know
what ports yum is using?

I tried to fetch repomd.xml from one of the URLs posted above and got
the following:

HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 404 Not Found
14:11:58 ERROR 404: Not Found.

Using Firefox I went to the site,
http://mirror.newnanutilities.org/pub/fedora/linux/core/updates/, and
found that directory updates/6/ does not exist. Fix your mirrors and
you should be OK.

Found out what the problem was.  1&1 blocks all traffic (except ssh)
to and from the server by default.  You have to call support and ask
them to open up your server.  Once that was done everything worked
like a charm.

I just browsed http://mirror.newnanutilities.org/pub/fedora/linux/core/updates/
and directories for Fedora 5 and 6 are present. I didn't do anything
different from the last visit. I have no idea why the directories were
not available of 5 days ago.

Is 1&1 your ISP? Are you saying that they blocked your use of FTP and HTTP?

Yes.  They block everything (not ssh) on a new server setup until you
call and request it changed.  When you have had it changed the server
is wide open and you can either use iptables or their Cisco type
firewall (web gui) to lock it down as needed.
