If I issue any command trying to contact updates repository I get:
yum list updates Loading "installonlyn" plugin Setting up repositories updates 53 B 00:00 http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?repo=updates-released-fc6&ar...: [Errno -1] Error importing repomd.xml for updates: Damaged repomd.xml file Trying other mirror. Error: Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: updates
And here is my fedora-updates.repo configuration file for yum:
# Repository : updates # [updates] name=Fedora Core $releasever - $basearch - Updates baseurl=http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?repo=updates-released-fc$release... gpgcheck=1 gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora enabled=1
Same problem with pirut and yumex. I searched in bugzilla but I didn't see the solution. Perfectly running in FC5

In my va/cache/yum/updates i Find a repomd.xml file saying:
XML Parsing Error: not well-formed Location: file:///var/cache/yum/updates/repomd.xml Line Number 1, Column 2:# no arch specified -^
I had the same problem.
I restore the repomd.xml file from a backup and it worked fine after that. I suggest that you try restoring just that file.

Before reading your e-mail, I tried another road: I restored the fedora-updates.repo from a backup and it worked!!! It seems that something went wrong in the new file but now I have no time to investigate it. I will do in the afternoon as I kept the non-working file.
