The xorg.conf file at the end of this message works, except for the Monitor section, which was just added to set gamma.
Entering: $ xgamma -gamma 0.80 from a console works fine.

Looking at /var/log/Xorg.0.log makes all clear. Section "Screen" needs a line Monitor "Monitor0"
