FC4 on Laptop, does it work??

Thinking to put FC4 on a Compaq Presario 2800 Laptop.
Is it possible.
Tninking of necessery drivers and such, knowing that Compaq sometimes do
strange things.

I ran FC4 on a Compag R4000 for almost a year with no problems.  The ATI 
card was the biggest pain, but even that was pretty easily solved.  The 
other major issue I had was with the stock FC kernel and the touchpad.  
In my case I had to compile a kernel to make the mousepad driver a 
module becuase the USB stuff was clobbering the PS2 driver unless the 
module was loaded last.

Running FC4 on a Compag Presario M2000, X in 1024x768, the Ethernet
works fine, the 802.11G interface is using NDIS, mouse (touch pad)
works fine. I haven't tried to use the dual monitor setup or the
TV (S-Video) out. The USB works fine so far (Camera, USB sticks,
Labjack, floppy and hard  drives). The sound is annoying. I down
loaded a commercial trial driver and lost the instructions on how
to use it :-). I haven't had time to play with the modem. Oh, I
dual boot, I have to use Word for a project I'm using though
Office does work better (long story).

Is there drivers for the ATI video avaible somewhere?
Any other culprits to think about?
Like: S-Video Out, the Fn-keys, IR-connections, Energie management,
soundcard, hotswap cd/dvd -- Floppy etc?

It is extremely safe to install FC4. If you have any problems, post
the output from "lspci -vv" I have Fedora working on two laptops; a
very old Dell and a relatively new Sony. The only issue (on both) is
the modem. If I really needed it, I could figure out one of the
various solutions.

BTW, I have an ALPS touchpad and a USB Logitech. Both work on the
Sony.

Never done any destop install before (only server), which dektop to use?
Pros and cons with the various ones?
Anything special to consider?

Will it work from stock, or do I need to do a special build and create my
own install CD's?

I prefer KDE. Install both and make your own decision. Gnome is the
default.

Burn CDs from the cd images (or DVD from DVD image). Make sure that
you burn these as disk copies or you'll create coasters.

Nah, its only a 40 gig disk, and this laptop is no use anyway, got a new
toy, Pavilion zd8000 to play with.

Thought it would be fun to play around with a linux laptop, also is there
any DOS-Emulators, got som old Dos/Win 3/95 games that the kids want to play
with, don't work on XP.

Both mouse options work fine.  I know that on a Compaq a coworker of 
mine has, the touchpad and the mouse worked out of the both.  The ATI 
drivers (the RPM versions are better in my experience than the installer 
ones) and I run mine at 1200 x 800 with no problems. 

As for desktops, I was a diehard GNOME fan, but KDE 3.5 is sensational 
and KDE 4 looks to be even better.  Haven't seen much buzz on the latest 
GNOME versions, so I don't know about it.  As for pros and cons, I can't 
really say.  Just about any package will work with either of the major 
desktops.  I would say the standard install will get nearly all of the 
components working except for (possibly) any wireless card you have in 
the box.  Otherwise it should be only a couple of things that might need 
tweaking.

Dell which I have double booted in FC4 and WinXP.

I have FC4 working on my hp pavilion zv5440. It has an
ALPS touchpad, nvidia 440, and and broadcom 4309 wifi.

I had to use ndiswrapper to get the wifi working, but
that was easy. It took a little tweaking to get the
touchpad scroll working, but the touchpad and usb
mouse worked out of the box. I haven't tried the
modem.

I took notes if anyone needs info on stuff I got
working. Oh, and I'm using the 32bit on it.

Been there, after I got the link yesterday.
I could'nt find any FC4 installs though, but others like debian, RH7 and
others.

The different contributors seems to have different problems, with a few in
common.
It seems that none have tested pcmia, modem, ir to name few, or had problems
with them.

Anyway I would probably do it, just need to get all data of the box first so
I can wipe it.
Will try with the stock FC4 cd's I got and see what happens.

Anyway, I believe the most important factor would be to see your laptop
model listed there, in order to make yourself a first impression about
how difficult could be things later. Then, if someone reported some
recent FC install, all the better. 
I bought my first laptop 50 days ago, a second-handed IBM ThinkPad T42,
and I am really impressed with it yet. Fortunately, there is enough
documentation about "Fedora and ThinkPads" over there, but Linux is
Linux and I've learned in these days so much from Gentoo related doc
(e.g.) as from any other... All them together can give you some bases..
In short, you should be interested preferably into perform:
	a) Wireless. First, look up which wireless card is installed  exactly.
Depending on that, you will need suitable drivers. Also, some wireless
theoretical concepts are probably appropiate here. 
	b) ACPI working. This will give your laptop the "Fn functions" and
more. Also, there could be some extra sw especially intended to your
laptop brand in particular, e.g. in Thinkpads are the tpb (thinkpad
buttons), ibm-acpi driver, etc. Even, a website and a mailing-list
(thinkpadwiki). 
Lastly, remember what commands like "yum search blabla" can give you
some nice surprise..

Just most people won't use them (modem, infrared, ..) but AFAIK,

Go ahead.
Advice: Prior, you may want to "prepare" the hard disk, I mean
partitioning, with some Linux CD/Live like _Linux System Rescue CD_,
also useful to test hw (HD, memory,..), collect hw data, etc...

Some models work out of the box, others need
serious tweaking for
various pieces. YMMV

FWIW, I have used several different Dell and Compaq models with very
good success on all.  Others have had extremely good success with IBM.

Try www.linmodems.org to find assistance with many of the winmodem
chipsets.

One thing that often surprises people about the IBM laptops is the
"hidden" recovery partition.
The system only shows one partition, but the drive actually contains a
second that is used for recovery in the case of a system thrashing the
filesystem.
Using a live cd or booting to rescue mode then using fdisk allows you to
get the partition structure you want and avoid the surprises the OP had
with the first install attempt.

Yes, it does, but the driver does not work for 3D gaming or 
applications. For that, you need the ATI drivers, which are easily 
installed from such repos that provide them in RPM form.

Wiped XP of the disk and installed FC4.
Laptop is a Compaq Presario 2822EA.

First attempt faild, anaconda bailed ot with a kilometer of errors, it
appeared that repartion the disk failed, although it was supposed to delete
all partitions.

Second attempt worked without any problems, apart from not be able to
identify the screen.
The ATI chipset was identified as a ATI 7500, which I assume is correct.

Changed later to generic LCD 1024*768, without any problems.

Now, the current problems I have is to make the "Quick Launch" and the other
buttoms such as volume etc. to work.
Having read various othters experiences, but I have not found any solution.
I assume that ther must be a driver or something similar to have them
operational.
But where do I find it?

To quick, found it as "LapTop keyboard Compaq", not "Compaq laptop
keyboard"

Got the volume working now, don't know about the Fn keys yet, The others,
"i", "e-mail", "search" and the "mute" do not
work.

On gnome, Desktop->Preferences->Keyboard Shortcuts is very helpful for 
defining these sorts of keys to open email, control volume and 
such...but as it appears you're using KDE I don't have experience with 
that so I couldn't tell you where to find an equivalent.

The "i", "mail" and "search" key appears not to generate any
keycodes,
atleast nothing happens in "xev" when I push those keys, same with Display
contrast/brightness keys and the display changer key.



Where are the key definitions stored, is it possible to add one more keybord
to the definition?
Don't know about the "mm-controls", and "Mute" does not work,
although they
produce scancode.

Hi all,

I use FC4 for a while. When I create a new file or
download a file to my desktop I can see them in the
terminal but I can't see the icons on the desktop. But
when I logout and then login again they show up on the
desktop. I wonder how to fix it so that the files will
appear on the desktop after they are created.

The easiest way is to click on the desktop and press ctl-r (control-r) 
to refresh the desktop image. The desktop is painted, refreshed 
occasionally instead of being actively refreshed in short cycles.

I was bit by this desktop property way back on earlier releases. I guess 
most people learned about ctl-r and accept this desktop shortcoming.

If you can't find what you need thru KDE or Gnome, you
could always use xbindkeys to bind key codes to
commands. BTW, I got most everything I wanted through
GNome and KDE controls. I use xbindkeys for shortcuts
like opening a command line.

I've read through this thread with interest. I have an HP Compaq nx9110
with volume control buttons that have never worked for me. I switched
the keyboard layout to "Laptop/notebook (eg Armada, Evo) Laptop
Keyboard".

Now the buttons act like they are doing something, meaning if I hit mute
it says Mute On, but the the sound is not muted. Same results with up
and down on the volume. I now also have kmix load in the task tray. 

I'm using alsa on this system, is that why the keys do not have any
affect? How do I get them to actually control the volume/work with alsa?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Update on this. Apparently the volume controls do work for the internal
speakers, but not when I have external speakers plugged into the
headphone jack. Any ideas?

I could start a new thread, hate to jump on someone else's like this,
but it was related to begin with.

Yes, but the goal is to control the volume from the buttons on the
laptop, not by running alsamixer. If I'm listening to music or watching
a movie using the headphones, it's a pain in the rear to have to load
alsamixer for adjusting the volume. Right now they control the "Master"
which apparently has no affect on the headphone volume.

I usually try a LiveCD like Knoppix, then if it works I try Fedora.  I 
have FC4 running on a HP Pavilion wonderfully well.  The only glitch was 
the firmware for the Intel wireless and that was solved with:

"yum install ipw2200-firmware"
