Fedora 11 very very slow on Athlon DAM 1500+, 1.3 GHz Machine

Hi,
I tried running Fedora 11, with it being only operating system installed,
and it was too slow for everything.
The message boxes, applications, games, etc... everything.. took a great
time to load.

It was installed on Ext4 file system. Is my computer not capable of handling
that?
Right now, I run Fedora 10 and there is not any slow down issue.
Please suggest.

Is the *system* slow, or only the display? Fedora does not use the vendor 
drivers for video, but rather the Xorg drivers which for some hardware may 
update at a rate only slightly faster that chiseling on stone tablets.

If you installed optional drivers on F10, that why it works at normal speed, F11 
uses a version of the kernel for which vendor drivers are not available (as of 
the last time I looked).

Other than being really slow and locking up on some display hardware, the new 
drivers are fine.

Obviously you may have other issue holding your system back, F11 runs very well 
on my two Athlon machines, I don't use graphics much on those machines.

Less than that, for sure.  On my machines it is usually done in a few
hours.  

There was something else going on.  Fedora often installs with services
started that are not appropriate for your system, because they are
trying to make things available to people who do need those services.
You should look in System->Administration->Services and turn off
anything you don't need.

If you do decide to test F11 again, be sure and use top and iotop (in a
terminal) to see what is using all the power of your machine.

A couple of user processes that eat a lot of power are beagle and
strigi, particularly if they are set to monitor lots of directories and web
pages.  When web surfing, the slowdown is noticeable. And ill formed
javascript can really such up the cpu time; use noscript firefox
plugin to turn off javascript unless you want it.

How much time the internal database creation should take.
I had Fedora 11 with very very low speed running on my desktop for 3 days,
and then had to move back to Fedora 10 :(.

I use an Athlon 1.2GHz 768MiB machine, ATI Radeon 7000/VE, F11 EXT4, 
and it's fine for speed.  Others report success with much slower CPUs.

The only really slow thing was the SELinux relabel on first (and 
second) boot.  I haven't felt any other slowness after my upgrade from 
F9, or today's separate installation from the F11 Live CD.

So, look for some other problem.  Bad Xorg video mode in /var/log/
Xorg.0.log?  `top` shows heavy load?  (I keep the Gnome System Monitor 
applet in my top panel for a quick overview.)

I have heard others say similar things about every new fedora release. Some have even
suggested that Linux is fast becoming a windows-like os as far as responsiveness is
concerned.

What I did for my poor old AMD laptop is I reconfigured  the kernel to
1. disable all SMP options.
2. chose "performance" in cpu frequency governor option.
    CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_DEFAULT_GOV_PERFORMANCE=y
3. made sure that my cpu type was checked instead of some pentium cpu.
4. made sure that I selected premptible kernel option which improves interactive process
responsiveness. CONFIG_PREEMPT=y

The result was a very noticeable improvement in interactive response.
