base Partitions for Linux

Dear List

Could some one tell me what are the partitions that should necessary  be
installed on the main hard disk on which Linux is installed ? i,e, that
should not be placed on a mountable partition!

It is a partition of its own, and must be FAT formatted.

"/boot/efi" doesn't have to be a separate mount.

If you use gummiboot and don't want to have two copies of vmlinuz and
initramfs on "/boot" and "/boot/efi", you can mount the ESP at
"/boot".

On my laptop:

# findmnt --output TARGET,SOURCE,FSTYPE /boot
TARGET SOURCE    FSTYPE
/boot  systemd-1 autofs
/boot  /dev/sda1 vfat

While others may have sustantially different opinions:
you should at least have

 /boot
 /boot/efi
 /

on your main disk. I would also suggest to have /home there, but it's of course
not mandatory and you can mount it from a stick or external harddisk as well.
