When you see the Grub menu, it gives you an option to edit the boot command
line. Add a "1" or a "3" to the end of that line, then boot from it
and see
what happens.

tried both and still same result. last thing i see before a blank screen is
starting smartd ok........ then it goes blank.

Have you backspaced out the rhgb quiet portion before entering the space
bar followed by a three?
This is easiest to edit by pressing the a key for append after revealing
the menu with any key and followed by the a key. Then you backspace out
rhgb quiet, add a space and follow with a 3 and press enter. This should
give you the login prompt where you can login as root or a user. As root
you could run system-config-display or at least check your
/etc/X11/xorg.conf file.
This file should at least tell you what driver it is trying to use which
is causing a blank screen. (Intel or i810, nv or nouveau, other)
Changing this entry for the driver to vesa should at least give you some
GUI with fair resolution.
Now what editor you use for editing in text mode is up to you. I prefer
using mc and its built-in editor. I'd run 'yum install mc' followed by
'mcedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf' and change whatever driver listed to vesa,
exit the editor, saving the changes and then logging in another terminal
as regular user and running startx. If it has intel, you could try i810
instead, if it lists nouveau, you could try nv instead.

what so ever. Its Compaq v6000 with a amd turion 64 x2 and nvida graph card.

my first install I had rebooting fine. But after changing background and
applying a screen saver this started. So I installed a clean copy. Still had
the problem. Is it possible I messed up on the install??? Should I try
installing a clean copy?? Is there any specific options I should use while
installing a clean copy that might help the situation out??

login. If so, then that works OK. Maybe try rebooting again and
instead of putting a 3 there, just keep it as it, and delete the rhgb
part and then let it boot. You might also try removing some of your

those is doing it. If you don't know how, while booted into run level 3
as you are currently doing, you can run "chkconfig --level 35
service-name off" and then you can boot up.

Ok while on lunch I tried brining up a brand new install and getting the
same blank screen. It goes through the first startup where you send your
hardware profile off and etc. but when I restart I get the screen. The Cap
lock light don't come on when pressed as well as the num lock. I did go
through and uncheck all services except for 3 or 4 and it goes one step
further and flashes the console logon screen that you see right before X
starts. But none the less still getting the blank screen. Im convinced it
must be a service that is starting up. Can anyone provide a list of the bare
minimum services I should have starting? That way I can see if that fixes
the problem and start adding services back one by one boot by boot too see
exactly which service is causing this and find a solution.

I would guess that it is either rhgb blanking out your screen after you
boot up or it is on a different screen (CTL-ALT-F7 or CTL-ALT-F8)
I seem to recall that Red Hat Graphical Boot is on one screen and then
the graphical login manager is on another screen. It might even be the
graphical login manager if running startx as a regular user works in
runlevel 3.
You might try adding enforcing=0 on the boot line after rhgb quiet to
see if SELinux is causing a problem with the graphical login manager. If
it comes up with that parameter at boot, you might try relabeling the
filesystem for SELinux. Running 'touch /.autorelabel' followed by
'reboot' as root would be the best solution.

I thought that rhgb was causing the problem on two recent threads. I did
not see any info that removing rhgb from the boot was tried. One thread,
this one I believe, disabling services was tried but probably disabled
firewalls, printer daemons and other important services.
