I need to setup a dual boot system on my x40 Thinkpad laptop. I've done it without problems before, but this time I have FC4 installed first, and now want to add a Windows XP partition. On intial FC4 setup, I used disk druid and kept some open space, then later used qtparted in knoppix to create an NTFS partition. Currently fdisk -l shows:
Disk /dev/hda: 40.0 GB, 40007761920 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4864 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hda1 * 1 13 104391 83 Linux /dev/hda2 14 3582 28667992+ 83 Linux /dev/hda3 3583 3647 522112+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris /dev/hda4 3648 4864 9775552+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
When I try to boot from a Windows XP disc to install Windows, it quickly flashes some text saying something like "please wait while checks your system...", then the screen is blank and nothing happens and I have to just reset. Should I be able to boot and install from a WinXP disc given that partition table?
Sorry if this it a bit of a windows question, but all these partions were created in linux, so maybe somebody could help.
Thanks! Ken

From what I remember when I set up my dual-boot system, Windows doesn't like a non-MS OS being the boot partition or something. I got the impression that it's best to install Windows first then install a proper OS of your choice.

Yeah, I guess I realize I should have installed Windows first, but I'm hoping there's a way to do it without wiping everything out and starting over since I already have FC4 set up...

Hoping the same thing.
I may copy my FC4 image to a few DVD's and then install Windows on my laptop. If I could get my DMA (known problem) to work, then I would not have any reason for Windows (just to play DVD's).

Ken,
It might have something to do with the starting sector of the NTFS partition being greater than 1024. In any case installing Windows first, Linux next is generally less painful. Sorry!
Bob...

You should be able to run the windows install so long as you know where the linux partitions are so you don't delete them. Create a win partition in the free space. At this point your machine will only boot windows. Next you can re-install grub and all should be good. Search google for how to re-install grub or how to retrieve a linux partition.

Not sure what this DMA problem you mentioned is. However, have you tried playing your DVD's with xine? I'm been running 100% windows free with minimal issues for a couple of years now.

It is xine that gives me the error message. I then run xine-check and it explains further that it is a DMA issue.
The DMA issue with the chip set (ich6) is documented and involves changes between the SATA and IDE drivers. At least the way I understand it. The latest kernel is so much better than the older kernel for accessing both the HD and DVD.
{pat on the back to the developers and thank you}
There are some things that I have to try but I need to get access to the laptop but my wife is using it heavily. Well it will give me time to do some further research and who knows, maybe a great fix.

I wonder if the problem is hda4. Normally windows creates that as an extended partition and it may not be able to use it for install/boot. Usually there are logical drives in the extended partition that windows uses so that could easily be an issue.
