I visited a java-based website and wondering why this
site seems to say that I need to enable Java in order
to use it?
I checked FF preferences and Java is enabled so that
is not the problem.
Firefox works fine on a windows platform so perhaps
I actually do not have Java installed on F9? If so, what
steps do I need to take in order to make it work?

the issue that he seems to be dealing with seems to be a function of the SUN
jre required in order to run the app on the client site. i'm not sure that
anything that you've pointed to relates to this specific issue.
so, there again.. if you don't want to help, you can simply delete the msg,
and move on.. there are others who apparently would try to offer a helping
hand...

Dan, you can check about:plugins to see what you have installed.
IcedTea/OpenJDK, which is free and in Fedora repositories, will work for
some sites. However, others still require the proprietary Sun Java

for the record, I have previously suggested to OP that he is repetitive
with this behavior...asking the list before he makes any attempt to find
the answer himself.
also for the record (and I am not the biggest fan of this), the 'Mailing

Since the topic of java-plugins for firefox on Fedora 9 has been
discussed at least 5 times on this list (if not 15) since the release of
Fedora 9, since the topic is mentioned in the Fedora 9 release notes and
since the topic is covered on the Fedora Project Wiki, and since the
topic is easily googled, it seemed to me to be a very fair response.
Also FTR, Iced Tea in Fedora 9 is now OpenJDK

I hope this question is related to the discussion, sufficiently. Since
it pertains to switching from gcj to sun java, I think it does. I
found several problems with that page you link to, and solved them,
but, I'm not sure if what I did was correct. First, the version
numbers included in the various commands have to be adjusted since the
actual version you download from the site has progressed beyond the
one that's used in the suggested commands - that's fairly trivial, but
needs to be pointed out. Once I sorted that out, I could not find an
elegant way to turn off gcj; my first inclination was to remove it,
but, that led to a request to delete about 25 other packages from my
machine for dependencies - I stopped that. Then I tried to remove the
plug-in from Mozilla - creating the linked file to the java, as
suggested by one of the commands on that linked page, had already
produced a message that the file existed, so I suppose that
libjavaplugin_oji.so was being used by gcj; I renamed that file and
then ran the link command again - that appeared to be successful and
produced the appearance of Sun Java in the plug-in list in Firefox;
but, the gcj plug-in was still there, and attempts to use the ATT
Relay site continued to fail; then I renamed a second plug-in in the
mozilla plug-in folder called libjavaplugin.so - that didn't work,
because it was simply a link to another *.so file somewhere I suppose,
so gcj continued to appear in my plug-in list in Firefox - finally, I
just created a folder inside the Mozilla plug-in folder called 'old'
and moved the now renamed files 'libjavaplugin_oji.so.gcj' and
'libjavaplugin.so.gcj' to this folder, and that finally solved the
problem. Now, the only java that appears in my Firefox plug-in list is
the one from Sun, and the ATT Relay site works perfectly.
So, my question is, was there some better way of accomplishing this
end? If not, this is not what one could call a simple solution, and
that page you linked to will definitely NOT get the desired result
without a lot of hacking. I'm betting I came up with a kludge, and
there must be a better way.

Gawd. What a tough nut to crack, but I got it.
The relaycall.com site does not work with F9's OpenJdk, at least for me.
But after installing Sun's Java and configuring the /etc/alternatives using
galternatives, I was able to get this site working now.
1) You do not need to create the libjavaplugin_oji.so in
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugin directory
as I have tested this. Use galternatives to set this link
(libjavaplugin.so) to Sun's plugin
and the link is updated properly in /etc/alternatives directory.
2) After you have installed Sun's Java, you still need to make sure
that the /etc/alternatives contains information to Sun's Java
installation.
To do that, use the nifty tool: galternatives:
1) run: galternatives
2) Click on left pane: java
If: /usr/java/jrel1.6.0_07/bin/java on right pane is not there,
then
Click; Add, then Browse, and add the path in. You can set the
priority
as desired. Be sure to click the radio-button on the correct
version you want to use!
3) Click on left pane: libjavaplugin.so
If: /usr/java/jrel1.6.0_07/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
on the right pane is not there, then
Click: Add, then Browse, and add the path in. You can set the
priority as desired.
Be sure to click the radio-button on the correct version you
want to use!
4) After configuring as above, you need to restart FF since the
changes are not
dynamically updated within FF.

more clear about that. I would recommend uninstalling it at least until

I wasn't referring to setting up but to using. You sometimes see the
"blockage" icon and have to decide which of several URLs on the page is
causing the problem, and if you want to enable them. That's work because
it's not automatic for URLs you haven't seen before.

you must be tiring in your elder age. :o)
my experience has been to temp enable site i am looking at and leave
rest disabled. this has seemed to work in most all cases. relaycall.com
being an exception. any other have been so few and far between, that i
do not readily recall what they may have been.
from most all of what i have seen, anything other than desired site
has been for something google related, adclick, and other unneeded.
maybe it is just has something to do with way i have configs set.
anyway, from first time of use, i have enjoyed noscript, and enjoy
browsing with it. and as i said in other post, when i log a site that
i do not have set for enable, i am wait with cursor in lower right
to click 'temporary enable'.

it becomes 'second nature' to swing cursor to lower right and wait for

I had already installed Opera on F9, and surprise, surprise, the applet loads
ok for that site, using the default java installed on F9.
I had already changed the line in Iceweasel's about:config, which identifies
the browser as Iceweasel/3.0.1 to Firefox/3.0.2, as I had problems with an
Internet radio streaming site, which wouldn't stream the radio unless the
browser identity was Firefox, so that doesn't appear to be why Iceweasel
can't initiate the applet.
Just a couple of observations.

as for using 'noscript', it could not be much simpler or easier to use.
I do use it, but I don't think everyone should.
anyone browsing internet should use 'noscript' if they want to stay
safe and control what web pages try to do. especially when it come
to java because of what java can do.

work with gcj? I don't know because I have the Sun version installed.
Seems to me that the contract is that you do some research, report what
the problem is and what steps you have taken when you ask the list for
help. It was clear that he made no attempt whatsoever to resolve the
problem via research because he couldn't even tell us which version of
java he was running.
As for helping out, knock yourself out including the additional barrier
of running noscript. If you want to walk him through installing the Sun
version of Java and live in peace and harmony with gcj, by all means, go
for it.

Hi Dan. According to Firefox on F9 using GCJ aka Iced Tea, when accessing the
site above, I get a bit of stuff for at&t at the top of the page, but no
applet. At the bottom of the Firefox window it says: Start: applet not
initialized.
By contrast, Firefox on my FC2 install, with Sun's JRE installed, runs the
applet with no problemo.
All I can suggest is downloading, and installing the JRE from Sun, if you want
to use this site. See below.

being that i have 'noscript' installed, all i had to do was click
'allow relaycall.com', plus the 2 url number addresses and all worked.
you may want to log
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
then click 'add to firefox'.
it will make you life a lot more enjoyable.
plus, once you have it installed, you can make 'relaycall.com' perminate
to load every time.
I installed noscript, then allowed 'relaycall.com' and IP address:
'12.x.x.x'
(but there was no second address that I could see) and the site still
thinks there
is no Java installed or so it seems. Not sure what is wrong at this point.
Anything I can try or report?

Hi Dan. Which site are you trying to access? I have found that the Java
installed on some distros doesn't work with some websites, and more than once
have had to install the JRE from Sun Microsystems. Having done that, and set
it up, accessing sites that use Java are no longer a problem.
Please post the URL for the site you're having problems with, and I'll try it
on F9, which uses Iced Tea, and also on my FC2 install which has a genuine,
although old version of the JRE from Sun Microsystems installed on it.

but i guess you felt/feel the need to belittle... and you still didn't
provide him with any additional help. but i guess your day is a little

as far as the java issue goes, i believe you can have java enabled on
firefox, but not have it installed as the jre on your box.
so, you're going to have to decide if you want the redhat/fedora java, the
ibm java, or the sun java..
if you haven't already searched the net... take a look at a few articles on
java jre firefox fedora... should get you up/running with no issues..

Dan, you can check about:plugins to see what you have installed.
IcedTea/OpenJDK, which is free and in Fedora repositories, will work for
some sites. However, others still require the proprietary Sun Java
Please tell us what site you're trying to use and what you currently
have installed.

Java is a source of a lot of traffic on this list because Fedora
developers are committed to openjdk (rightly so in my view).
