All that's necessary is to go into the KDE control panel and tell it
(pardon the double negative) not to turn off anti-aliasing for the

It took me a while to find
Control Center/Appearance & Themes/Fonts/Use anti-aliasing for fonts/configure
so I thought it worth mentioning.
