CUPS Problem

Howdy, Folks

Happy New Year.

I'm trying to setup a JetDirect queue on FC1 and I keep getting an error 
when the CUPS system tries to create the queue. Everything goes fine until 
I try to print a test page. Then I get the following error msg:

Cannot write queues

sh: line 1: /usr/bin/lpr - no such file or directory


/usr/bin/lpr links to /etc/alternatives/print which links to 
/usr/bin/lpr.LPRng which doesn't exist.

This FC1 was installed as an upgrade of an existing installation of RHL7.3.

Does anyone have any suggestions about what to do next?

I would use yum. Do a 'yum remove cups' and then add it back: yum 
install cups.

Something got FUed after the update.

RHN/Up2date does not seem to work from the GUI. I installed Fedora as a 
"Personal PC" and when I went to run the update it seemed to download 
everything, although I couldn't find it on the machine anywhere, and 
started to run an update, but just locked up at some point during the 
process. Is this an isolated incident, or have others seen this as well?

I had lots of problems using up2date. One poster
suggested that I just try running "yum update" and
that worked much better. My system was at work and
behind the corp firewall, so I had to type the
following to get YUM to work through the firewall:

export http_proxy=http://<myproxyserver>:<port>
yum update

Actually, I found the problem. If you go into /usr/share/rhn you'll 
notice that there are several versions of the file RPM-GPG-KEY. When you 
run up2date and it asks you to install that file, RPM-GPG-KEY. On Fedora 
you have to install RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora. Since I'm just now going through 
and putting Fedora through it's paces I'm doing a few different 
installs. When I installed as a "personal" machine and went to run the 
update utility it messed up becasue it installed the wrong key. When I 
reinstalled as a server and was working in text mode I got fed up with 
the problem and went to look and see if the file was actually there, and 
then discovered the other key files. When I installed the -fedora 
version everything worked as expected.

I've seen up2date hang while trying to resolve dependencies
(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=111041).  The
workaround is to use Yum or to install dependencies by hand.

I also found a hang when re-fetching an RPM from an apt repo
(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=111032).

There are some other bugzilla reports of hangs with up2date as well.

Could you be seeing one of these?

Hi,

I had same problems just few days ago. To fix it I just relinked
printing related stuff (all links to something ending with .LPRng) from
/etc/alternatives/ to point into /usr/(s)bin/*.cups instead of
/usr/(s)bin/*.LPRng For example 'ln -sf /usr/bin/lpr.cups
/etc/alternatives/print'

This sounds like an update from RH9, where you were using LPRng.
Probably the best thing to do is remove redhat-switch-printers and LPRng
RPMs.  You might also want to reinstall the CUPS RPM.  Then reconfigure.

Actually update from RH7.3. Can't find any rpms related to
redhat-switch-printer nor LPRng. Reinstalling CUPS rpms had no effect.

So update procedure to FC1 seems to be bit broken in systems using
LPRng, because it's not doing what redhat-switch-printer does(*), while
still removing LPRng and leaving CUPS as the only option.

* I don't know exactly what redhat-switch-printer does, because I can't
find anything like that from my FC1 or RH7.3 installations. But I think
it basically just makes that relinking described in my previous post. Am
I anywhere near the truth?

Yes.  I'm not sure what a reasonable thing is to expect from the installer
in a situation like this.  At very least, users could/should be warned in
the release notes that they should redhat-switch-printer before upgrading
if they are using LPRng.

It is a bug (in bugzilla) that I need to figure out how to fix.  It
might be as simple as doing what redhat-switch-printer would have
done, but in the post-install scriptlet for cups.
